The 19:30 at Nottingham, the Nottingham’s Finest Ale Mile Handicap, is a small-field Class 6 staying handicap over 1m6f on good-to-firm ground. With only six runners declared, this looks likely to be a tactical contest rather than a strongly-run stamina test, and that makes race position just as important as raw ability.
The obvious starting point is Jack Langley, who arrives as the clear form horse. He made a solid debut for Charlie Clover before winning easily at Lingfield last time, and although he has been raised 6lb, that rise may not be enough to stop him if he remains in the same form. His recent ratings are comfortably among the best in the field, and the statistical profile is strong too, especially in class, handicap, and place terms. He deserves to be favourite and is the most likely winner.
However, the value angle may lie with Regally Blonde. She won this exact race last year off a 1lb higher mark on good-to-firm ground, so conditions are ideal. Her recent form does not leap off the page, but this looks like a plausible target. The pace map is also interesting: there is no obvious front-runner, and Regally Blonde is the one runner with the clearest chance of racing prominently. In a weakly-run small-field race, that tactical advantage could make her dangerous at around 9/1.
Saratoga Gold is respected as a consistent older handicapper who has enough back form to be involved, but his hold-up style may not be ideal if the race develops into a sprint. He looks more of a place contender than a win bet at the current odds. Free World has back-class and a trainer capable of reviving horses, but his recent form and possible ground concerns make him risky. Chambers and Ikigai Star both need to prove much more on the Flat to be serious win candidates.
Overall, Jack Langley is the horse to beat, but he is priced accordingly. Regally Blonde is the interesting alternative: proven in the race, suited by the ground, well handicapped, and potentially favoured by the pace setup.
