The 21:00 Nottingham, the Construction Day 14th October Handicap, is a Class 6 contest over 1m2f on good-to-firm ground, and it looks a race where tactical positioning could prove just as important as raw ability.
At the head of the market, Holly Mist sets the standard. Roger Varian’s filly has yet to win in eight starts, but her recent form is among the strongest in the field. She ran well for a long way when third at Doncaster over 1m4f, a trip that appeared to stretch her stamina. Dropping back to 1m2f looks a clear positive, and first-time blinkers could help sharpen her up. With Varian boasting a strong Nottingham record, she deserves to be considered the most likely winner.
However, the most interesting betting angle may be Danehill Star. Although still winless on turf, he has been placed on his last two starts and arrives here in good form. HorseRaceBase pace data identifies him as the likely sole front-runner, and with low collapse risk, he could get an uncontested lead. In a modest Class 6 handicap, that tactical advantage is significant. His place statistics are also solid, making him a strong each-way candidate at around 9/1.
Stipulation is another runner to consider for the places. He has a strong statistical profile, particularly in similar class and days-since-run conditions, and his consistency gives him each-way appeal. He may need luck from a hold-up position, but if the race opens up late, he is capable of finishing strongly.
Didaar is dangerous if building on his Newmarket return. He made late headway there and now steps back up in trip while dropping in grade. The concern is that he is a long-standing maiden and may not get the strong pace he ideally needs.
Time Turner also has claims on ability, but he can be slowly away and may find himself with ground to make up. At shorter odds, he makes less appeal from a value perspective.
The unexposed angle comes through Into Combat, representing Sir Mark Prescott. His form is not convincing, but lightly raced Prescott handicappers can improve suddenly, so he cannot be entirely dismissed.
Overall, Holly Mist looks the most likely winner, but Danehill Star may be the best value play. If he secures the lead cheaply, he could prove hard to pass.
