15:25 Market Rasen Preview: I Am Spider Man Emerges As Value In Open Staying Handicap

·

The 15:25 at Market Rasen is a competitive Class 5 staying handicap hurdle over 2m7f on good ground, and while the market is understandably drawn towards recent winners such as Jack The Savage and Larkfield Lusive, the deeper race-shape and statistical evidence points towards a more open contest.

The key feature of this race is the likely pace setup. HorseRaceBase’s Comment Shaper identifies no confirmed front-runner, with three runners expected to race prominently and six likely to be held up. That suggests a moderate early tempo rather than a strongly-run staying test. In that scenario, horses who can travel close enough before staying on late should be favoured.

Larkfield Lusive has obvious claims. He won at Southwell last time over 3m on good ground and has strong suitability signals, including proven form at the trip, good-ground effectiveness and Brian Hughes in the saddle. However, he only went up 4lb for that win and did not appear to have a huge amount in hand. He remains a solid player, but perhaps not one to treat as a standout.

Jack The Savage is another with recent winning form, having scored at Fontwell over 3m2f. Sean Bowen is a clear positive and the horse arrives in good heart, but he is a 9yo who looks fairly exposed and a 5lb rise leaves little margin for error. At around the head of the market, he may be short enough.

The most interesting betting angle is I Am Spider Man. He has not won since 2024, which is the obvious concern, but his recent consistency is hard to ignore. Four successive placed efforts show he is holding his form well, and his latest RPR figures put him right in the mix. Crucially, HorseRaceBase flags him as a very consistent hold-up horse with a strong late-finishing profile. Stat Attack adds further support: his horse/trainer place record stands out at 4 places from 5, while James Bowen also has a strong Market Rasen record. At around 8/1, he appeals as the best each-way value.

Indian Sunbird is another major player. He was a good second at Southwell last time, where the winner got first run, and he has strong staying credentials on good ground. His late-finishing profile is also highly positive, and he should be finishing strongly if the race develops into a stamina test from the home turn. He looks a fair win contender rather than an outsider.

Lunar Morning is the fascinating improver. He showed much more in a first-time visor over course and distance last time, posting a strong RPR in maiden company, and now switches into handicap company. With only limited racecourse experience, he has more upside than most of these exposed staying handicappers. The concern is that his statistical profile is less robust than the older, battle-hardened rivals, but at a double-figure price he remains dangerous.

Matoury also deserves respect at Market Rasen, where both of his wins have come. He scored here last month and has a useful horse/jockey place record with William Maggs. The downside is inconsistency, but he is not without each-way claims if in the same mood.

Copper Beach, The Roc Hopper and You Did all have cases of varying strength. Copper Beach has enough back-form to be competitive but comes with a weakening/unpredictable profile. The Roc Hopper is interesting after a better run for Rebecca Menzies, while You Did has better class and handicap statistics than his price suggests, making him a possible outsider for those seeking a bigger-priced angle.

Overall, this looks less straightforward than the market implies. Larkfield Lusive and Jack The Savage are solid recent winners, but both may be priced close to their ceiling. The value lies with horses who combine current form, finishing strength and a workable price.

The selection is I Am Spider Man, who brings consistent recent form, strong late-running evidence and excellent place-based statistical support. Indian Sunbird rates the main danger, while Lunar Morning is the one with most upside.

Selection: I Am Spider Man
Main danger: Indian Sunbird
Best improver: Lunar Morning
Each-way alternative: Matoury
Overbet runner: Jack The Savage
