20:30 Wolverhampton Preview: King Of Speed Looks the Each-Way Angle in Tactical Class 6 Handicap

·

The 20:30 at Wolverhampton is a 13-runner Class 6 handicap over 1m142y on standard Tapeta, and it has the look of a tricky but potentially rewarding betting race. With each-way terms paying four places, the shape of the race may be just as important as the bare ratings.

The key feature is the lack of obvious early pace. HorseRaceBase’s race-shape data shows no confirmed front-runner, with only Crown The Future projecting as a naturally prominent runner. That creates a weak-pace scenario where horses racing close to the speed could gain a tactical advantage, while deep closers may need luck.

Midnight Media heads the market after returning to form when runner-up in a Wolverhampton maiden eight days ago. She is lightly raced, receives the 3yo allowance and has clear claims back at this venue. However, at short odds in a 13-runner Class 6 handicap, she looks more solid than outstanding from a value perspective.

Mythical Isle is highly rated by RatingTheRaces and comes here after winning a classified race at Wolverhampton over 7f. The concern is that he now returns to handicap company and steps up in trip. He is respected, but the market may be giving him enough credit.

Starakova is interesting back on Tapeta. She won here over 7f in April and her latest turf run at Windsor can be forgiven. As a 3yo filly with scope to progress, she remains one of the more appealing win-value contenders.

The strongest each-way case, however, is King Of Speed. He has an excellent Wolverhampton record, with all four of his all-weather wins coming over course and distance. Racing Post gives him the best RPR in the field, while the Stat Attack data highlights repeated strength in today’s conditions: strong place records at the track, over the distance, in the class and on the surface. His wide draw is not ideal, but at double-figure odds he looks overpriced.

Crown The Future is the tactical danger. If allowed an easy lead or prominent pitch, he could outperform his odds. The question is whether he truly stays this trip, as his previous C&D attempt left doubts.

Manton Road also has solid course form and a respectable statistical profile, but he can be slowly away, which is not ideal in a race that may not be strongly run.

The hold-up types, including Seconds Count, Implied Volatility and Celebrating Ethel, may need the race to develop more strongly than the pace map suggests. Celebrating Ethel is interesting at a big price on ratings, but recent handicap form is a concern.

Overall, this looks a race where the favourite is respected but not unbeatable. Midnight Media may be the most likely winner, but King Of Speed makes most appeal from a betting perspective.

Betting view

King Of Speed is the standout each-way value, with Starakova next best for those seeking a progressive alternative. Midnight Media is the obvious win threat, but her price leaves little margin for error.
