4:18 Pontefract Preview: Value May Sit Away From The Top Of The Market

·

The 4:18 Pontefract, the Go Racing Bet With Jayne Handicap, is a competitive Class 5 mile handicap on good ground, and the early market does not tell the whole story. With ten runners declared and several horses bringing strong statistical profiles, this looks a race where place and each-way value may be more appealing than simply siding with the favourite.

Flying Fletcher and Clonquest head the market, but neither dominates the statistical landscape. Both have claims, particularly Flying Fletcher, who brings solid distance and handicap-place figures, but the deeper HorseRaceBase data points towards a more open contest than the odds suggest.

One of the strongest profiles belongs to Harswell Ruby. She repeatedly appears in the top Stat Attack angles, including race-code, going, class, distance and jockey-related place statistics. Her overall profile looks especially solid for an each-way approach, and at around 7/1 she makes plenty of appeal as a horse likely to run her race.

Welbury is another major player from a value perspective. The Ed Bethell and Daniel Tudhope combination is a positive at Pontefract, and Welbury brings strong career and trainer-related place figures. As a three-year-old, he also has more scope for progression than some of the exposed older handicappers in the field. At around 8/1, he looks one of the more attractive win-and-place options.

Mount King is perhaps the most interesting outsider. He is more exposed, but the depth of his place-based statistics is hard to ignore. His record with David Allan, his Pontefract profile and his track-distance angles all suggest he could outrun odds of around 14/1. He may not be the most obvious winner, but he looks a live candidate for the frame.

Wetsand also deserves respect. Clifford Lee has strong Pontefract numbers, and Wetsand’s own career and race-code figures give him a sound statistical base. At double-figure odds, he remains one to consider, particularly if the market continues to overlook him.

Sailthisshipalone was eye-catching on the RapidView data, especially for class, going and distance-related angles. However, the Stat Attack page does not promote him quite as strongly as Harswell Ruby, Welbury or Mount King, so he may be more of a secondary value contender than a primary bet.

The main concern with the market leaders is that they are priced as though the race is more straightforward than the data suggests. Flying Fletcher has enough statistical support to be respected, but at around 100/30 he does not leap out as value. Clonquest has some positives but also lacks the same depth of horse-specific evidence shown by several bigger-priced rivals.

Overall, this looks a race to attack from an each-way angle. Harswell Ruby makes the most solid place-case, Welbury has the best blend of value and upside, while Mount King offers the most interesting bigger-priced option.

The shortlist is Harswell Ruby, Welbury, Mount King and Wetsand.

The best each-way play is Harswell Ruby, while Welbury rates the best value win-and-place contender. Mount King is the outsider most likely to outrun his price.
