Ayr 17:30 – Dream Weddings At Western House Hotel Handicap Preview

·

A competitive Class 5 handicap over 1m5f at Ayr looks set to be shaped as much by race tactics as raw ability, with the pace map suggesting a potentially decisive advantage for the likely lone front-runner.

Race Shape Could Be Key

The Comment Shaper analysis identifies La Tosca as the sole likely front-runner in the field, with only Aighear expected to race prominently. The remainder of the runners are predicted to be ridden patiently, including market leader Is She Now, strong finisher Annandale, and several other hold-up performers.

With an Early Shape Pressure rating of just 1.96 and a low collapse-risk assessment, this looks the type of race where an uncontested leader could be difficult to reel in if allowed an easy rhythm.

That immediately brings La Tosca into sharper focus than the betting market may currently suggest.

Favourite Deserves Respect

Is She Now arrives seeking a hat-trick after two victories since joining Daragh Bourke. The eight-year-old landed a course-and-distance handicap on soft ground before following up at Musselburgh last week.

The mare remains relatively well treated despite carrying a 4lb penalty and has clearly rediscovered her enthusiasm. Her recent Racing Post Ratings are moving in the right direction and she enters the race in the strongest current form.

However, there are two concerns. Firstly, she is likely to be ridden patiently in a race lacking pace. Secondly, she is now priced accordingly, leaving little margin for error.

She is the most likely winner on recent form, but not necessarily the best betting proposition.

The Pace Angle: La Tosca

Three-year-old La Tosca has yet to win but has finished second in all three handicap starts and continues to look capable of improving.

Her Ayr second over this trip in June produced a solid RPR, and while her latest Doncaster runner-up effort came in a small field and may flatter her slightly, she still retains one of the more progressive profiles in the race.

Most importantly, she appears set to secure an uncontested lead. In staying handicaps, that can be a powerful advantage, particularly when there is little evidence of rivals wanting to force the issue.

Receiving significant weight from older rivals and possessing the highest upside in the field, she looks a major player.

Strong Alternatives

Elemental Eye comes here after a decisive Wolverhampton success where first-time blinkers appeared to spark significant improvement. The handicapper has reacted with a 6lb rise, but the recent RPR of 72 makes him highly competitive.

Consistency has never been his strongest attribute, which is the obvious risk, but he arrives in form and represents a serious threat if reproducing his latest effort.

Annandale is another who commands respect. A three-time course-and-distance winner, he won at Hamilton before disappointing as favourite there eleven days ago. His record at Ayr is excellent and the return to a venue that suits him could easily see him bounce back.

The concern is that he may once again find himself needing the pace to develop in his favour.

Place Contenders

Aighear and Ebony Maw both have strong Ayr credentials and plenty of course experience.

Aighear’s best form has generally come on softer ground and quicker conditions may not be ideal, but she remains capable of staying on into the places.

Ebony Maw is now on a career-low mark and shaped better when third over course and distance last time. While winning has become difficult, he has enough track form to outrun double-figure odds.

Others

This Rib is stepping dramatically up in trip after disappointing efforts over much shorter distances and requires a leap of faith.

Galahad Threepwood is attractively handicapped on old form but showed little on his recent return from a lengthy absence and has plenty to prove.

Verdict

The market is likely to revolve around Is She Now, and she is a perfectly logical favourite given her recent winning streak. However, the tactical shape of the race points strongly towards La Tosca, who looks set to enjoy the run of the race from the front and still has more improvement to come than most of her rivals.
