A fascinating six-runner renewal of the Pontefract Park Silver Sprint Trophy looks set to provide a tactical and highly competitive Class 2 sprint, with several runners bringing contrasting profiles into the contest.
The market is headed by Dark Cloud Rising, who arrives on the back of an impressive victory at Ripon where he made all and scored with authority. David O’Meara’s four-year-old produced a Racing Post Rating of 101 that day and now bids to defy a 6lb rise in the weights. Drawn in stall one and proven under similar conditions, he appears the most likely pace angle in a race where there is surprisingly little confirmed early speed. The concern for supporters is price rather than ability, with odds around 6/5 leaving little room for error in a competitive handicap.
The most intriguing challenger is undoubtedly Garfield Shadow, making his first start for Hamad Al Jehani after previously racing for Richard Fahey. A multiple winner with strong six-furlong handicap form, including a notable Ascot second off a lower mark, he possesses the statistical profile that jumps off the page. His career record of seven placings from nine starts and four wins from nine suggests a horse of considerable quality, while the booking of James Doyle catches the eye. The major question is whether a 593-day absence can be overcome first time out for a new stable.
Veteran sprinter Badri arrives in excellent heart and may prove the value play in the race. The nine-year-old has won two of his last four starts and recorded another decisive success over this course and distance just 16 days ago. His profile is particularly attractive when viewed through the likely race shape. With several runners preferring prominent positions and no obvious confirmed front-runner apart from Dark Cloud Rising, there is a realistic possibility of a strongly run contest. Badri’s proven ability to finish strongly could become a major asset in the closing stages.
The Strikin Viking is perhaps the hardest horse in the race to assess. A Group 3 winner in Germany last season, he possesses arguably the strongest piece of pure class form in the field. However, his recent international campaign has produced mixed results, and he returns from another five-month break carrying top weight. If retaining his ability and well treated by the handicapper, he could easily outrun his odds, but fitness and current wellbeing remain unknowns.
Beaujolais Nouveau enters calculations after a solid fifth in a competitive York handicap last time. She has responded well to the fitting of cheekpieces this season and appears to be operating consistently from her current mark. While she may lack the upside of some rivals, her recent form entitles her to respect and she looks capable of being involved if the principals underperform.
The outsider of the field is El Bodon, whose winter Kempton victories demonstrate that the ability remains somewhere beneath the surface. Jane Chapple-Hyam’s stable has been operating in excellent form recently, but the gelding arrives after a disappointing effort at Windsor and now sports first-time cheekpieces in an attempt to reignite his campaign. He needs a revival but is not without hope at double-figure odds.
From a tactical perspective, the race revolves around whether Dark Cloud Rising can dictate matters from the front. If allowed an uncontested lead, he could prove very difficult to reel in. However, if pressure develops from the prominent racers, the race may set up perfectly for stronger finishers such as Badri and Garfield Shadow.
Power Ranking
1. Garfield Shadow
2. Dark Cloud Rising
3. Badri

Verdict
Dark Cloud Rising deserves favouritism and is the most likely winner on recent form, but the combination of price and race shape makes Badri particularly appealing from a betting perspective. Garfield Shadow is the unknown quantity with the highest potential upside and could easily emerge as the biggest threat if fully tuned up for his stable debut.
