Wolverhampton 19:30 Preview: Jesse Luc Sets the Standard, But Baba Reza Looks the Value

·

The 19:30 at Wolverhampton is a competitive Class 5 handicap over 6f 20y on the Tapeta, and with a full field of seasoned sprinters, the race looks likely to be shaped by pace as much as raw ability.

The early-speed picture is especially interesting. Candy Warhol appears the most likely front-runner, but his recent profile suggests he is vulnerable late. Behind him, several runners are expected to race prominently, including Daytona Lady, Style King, Tuscan Point and Dutch Finale. That should ensure the race is run at a fair clip, giving the stronger finishers every chance to get involved.

On ratings, Jesse Luc makes obvious appeal. He tops the RatingTheRaces figures and brings a solid Racing Post profile into the race, with all six career wins coming over 6f on the all-weather. His recent form is consistent rather than spectacular, but wind surgery since his last run adds a possible improvement angle. In a race where many have questions to answer, he looks the most reliable win candidate.

Daytona Lady is another major player. She is a three-time course-and-distance winner and has the tactical versatility to sit close enough before finishing strongly. Racing Post notes that she needs a strong pace to be seen at her best, and the projected race shape suggests she may get exactly that. Her main issue is price: the market has already found her.

The best value may lie with Baba Reza. He returned from a layoff and second wind operation with a promising runner-up effort at Carlisle, and his ratings put him close to the top of this field. Statistically, he also has a strong place profile in this grade and under these conditions. At around 8/1 or bigger, he looks more attractive than some shorter-priced rivals.

Tuscan Point is another to respect. His recent turf efforts are easy enough to forgive, and his return to the all-weather is a clear positive. He is 2-5 on artificial surfaces and has strong condition-based statistics. Drawn low, he could be well placed if able to hold a position early.

Moostar is solid and consistent, but her overall profile is slightly less convincing at the prices. She is only 1-17 lifetime, and although she has been running well, she may be short enough in a race with several credible alternatives.

Maharajas Express has a strong place profile at Wolverhampton and could run on late if the leaders overdo things, but he has pulled too hard in recent starts and needs to settle better. Havana Sky also has course-and-distance form and good historical stats, though his latest run was poor and he needs to bounce back.

The likely race shape points towards the strong finishers, but not necessarily the deepest closers. Jesse Luc has the class and consistency to win, while Daytona Lady should get the right setup. However, from a betting perspective, Baba Reza stands out as the value option.

Selection: Jesse Luc
