The 14:15 at Yarmouth on Wednesday looks a fascinating Class 5 fillies’ handicap over seven furlongs, with several progressive types meeting a handful of exposed but reliable rivals on ground expected to remain good to firm.
A field of eight goes to post, and while recent form points strongly towards Dream Illusion and Allegrino, there is a strong case that three-year-old Lovers Leap may still have the most untapped potential in the race.
Representing the in-form Jane Chapple-Hyam yard, Lovers Leap arrives here following a respectable sixth on her handicap debut at Salisbury. At first glance the result may not look spectacular, but a closer examination suggests the performance was better than the bare finishing position. She had previously broken her maiden at Beverley and remains lightly raced with only five career starts to her name. With Billy Loughnane taking over in the saddle and the stable operating at an excellent strike rate, she looks well placed to take another step forward.
The biggest threat could come from Dream Illusion, who brings the strongest recent form into the contest. Michael Herrington’s filly produced a career-best Racing Post Rating when runner-up at Wetherby last month and proved on that occasion that she can be effective on fast turf as well as her preferred all-weather surface. Her current mark looks workable and she sets the standard on recent achievements, although she may not possess quite the same scope for improvement as some of her younger rivals.
Allegrino is another who commands significant respect. Andrew Balding’s filly shaped encouragingly when third at Salisbury on her return to turf after a break and may well improve for that outing. William Buick’s booking immediately catches the eye, and if settling better than she did last time, she has the ability to become a serious contender. Her profile suggests she remains capable of progressing beyond her current mark.
Among the each-way contenders, Ironist is difficult to dismiss. George Margarson’s mare has an excellent record at Yarmouth and finished second in this race twelve months ago. While her latest run at Kempton was disappointing, a return to a track she clearly enjoys could easily spark a revival. The quick ground is not ideal, but her course form makes her a leading candidate for the places.
Fantasy Obsessor has been running consistently in sprint handicaps and shaped well when second over six furlongs at this venue recently. The step back up to seven furlongs may unlock further improvement if she settles early enough, while Galileo Charm, Izzy Fast, and Angels’ Share all need to find more on recent evidence to trouble the principals.
From a tactical perspective, the race appears likely to be run at an honest pace. Fantasy Obsessor and Izzy Fast could ensure a solid gallop, which should suit the stalkers sitting just behind the speed. That scenario may play perfectly into the hands of Lovers Leap and Allegrino, both of whom are expected to be produced late.
Verdict
This looks a competitive handicap, but the balance of proven ability and future potential points towards Lovers Leap. Dream Illusion rates the chief danger on recent form, while Allegrino appeals as the most interesting value alternative and could easily outperform market expectations.
