Tomarlo Looks the One to Beat in Open Wolverhampton Sprint
The 19:40 at Wolverhampton is a modest Class 6 handicap over 6f, but despite the low grade it presents an intriguing betting puzzle. Several runners arrive with questions to answer, while a handful have enough recent form to suggest they can play a major role.
At the head of the market sits Tomarlo, who appears to have one of the strongest and most reliable profiles in the field. Since joining Ollie Sangster, the four-year-old has produced two respectable efforts over 5f and now returns to what looks a more suitable 6f trip. His fourth-place finish over course and distance in May reads well in the context of this race, and a mark of 52 gives him every chance of breaking through in a contest lacking depth.
The obvious danger is The Fixer, whose recent profile perfectly sums up the frustrations of backing sprinters at this level. He returned to form when winning over 5f at Wolverhampton nine days ago, but followed that effort with a disappointing display after causing problems at the start on Monday evening. On pure ratings he has the strongest recent form in the race, but his inconsistency makes him difficult to trust at a short price.
One who could easily outrun market expectations is Maury. His recent turf performances have been poor, but his all-weather form tells a different story. The four-year-old won at Lingfield in March and produced a solid effort at Wolverhampton in May before encountering less suitable conditions on grass. A return to Tapeta could spark a revival and he looks attractively priced compared to some of the principals.
Mintana also warrants respect. A previous course-and-distance winner, she showed signs of returning to form when finishing third over 7f here last month. Dropping back to 6f should not inconvenience her and she appeals as one of the more solid each-way propositions in the line-up.
From an improvement perspective, the lightly raced three-year-olds are worth monitoring. Unique Procedure makes her handicap debut after three educational runs in novice company and could take a sizeable step forward from her opening mark. Similarly, Power Cut has shown only modest form so far but remains relatively unexposed and represents a stable capable of improving young sprinters in this grade.
The pace angle suggests a fairly controlled race rather than a burn-up. The Fixer and Tomarlo are both likely to race prominently, and with no abundance of confirmed front-runners, those securing good early positions may gain a tactical advantage around Wolverhampton’s sharp 6f.
Overall, Tomarlo brings the most convincing combination of recent form, suitability to conditions and consistency. Maury looks the value alternative if returning to his all-weather best, while Mintana appeals as a dependable each-way option in a race where reliability is in short supply.
