Brighton 18:20 Preview: Valsharah Looks Ready to Break Through

·

The 18:20 classified stakes over Brighton’s unique 6f course brings together a familiar cast of low-grade sprinters, many of whom crossed swords over the same course and distance just seven days ago. While these races can often produce surprise results, the recent Brighton form looks the strongest guide and may again hold the key.

At the head of the market is Valsharah, a horse who remains a maiden after 26 starts but produced one of his better efforts when finishing second over this course and distance last Tuesday. Despite breaking awkwardly and racing keenly, he still managed to finish strongly and was only denied by the well-treated Big Time Rascal. The Michael Appleby-trained gelding is not the easiest ride, but he arrives with the highest recent ability figure in the field and appears to have another excellent opportunity to finally get his head in front.

The obvious danger is Big Time Rascal, who landed that Brighton classified contest last week. A dual course-and-distance winner, he clearly enjoys the track and conditions. The question for punters is whether a 5lb penalty leaves him vulnerable to reversal with Valsharah. He is likely to run his race once again, but there may be less room for improvement than some of his rivals.

One runner who could be underestimated is veteran front-runner Some Nightmare. Although now nine years old, he has been running with admirable consistency in handicaps and returns to classified company for the first time in some time. If allowed an easy lead, he could prove difficult to pass around Brighton’s turning sprint track and looks capable of outrunning market expectations.

Apple’s Angel also emerges from last week’s race with some credit. Her fourth-place finish was arguably her best effort for some time, and a repeat performance would bring her into each-way calculations. The concern is whether she can reproduce that level of form consistently.

Among the outsiders, Molly Marine is one to note. She makes her first start for Martin Dunne and her first appearance in classified company. While her form figures are uninspiring, she remains relatively lightly raced and could improve in this easier grade. At double-figure odds, she represents one of the more interesting speculative options in the field.

Others arrive with questions to answer. Manhattan Chute has struggled since a surprise Lingfield victory earlier in the year, while Bated Breeze remains a maiden after numerous chances and continues to look frustrating. Barnsnape Boy has winning course form but may find this drop back to 6f less suitable than the 7f trip over which he was successful last month.

Pace and Race Shape

The likely pace angles are Some Nightmare, Big Time Rascal, and Apple’s Angel, suggesting an honest rather than frenetic gallop. Brighton’s sprint track often rewards runners able to secure a prominent position, and the race may be set up perfectly for a horse stalking the leaders rather than one coming from well off the pace.

That scenario could suit Valsharah ideally. His ability to travel strongly behind the speed and finish off his race effectively was evident last week, and a cleaner start may be enough to turn the tables on Big Time Rascal.

Verdict

This looks another good opportunity for Valsharah, whose recent course-and-distance second can be upgraded given the circumstances of the race. Big Time Rascal should once again be heavily involved, while Some Nightmare appeals as the value alternative if able to dominate from the front.
