18.40 Gloriola Can Continue Her Progression in Wolverhampton’s 18:40 Classified Stakes

·

The 18:40 at Wolverhampton may only be a Class 6 classified contest, but it presents an intriguing clash between exposed older campaigners and a handful of younger runners who still have scope for improvement.

At the head of the market sits First Encounter, a horse who has already shown he can dominate at this level. A dual winner in classified company earlier this year, including over course and distance, he brings a solid and reliable profile into the race. His recent fifth behind Gloriola over the same track may not leap off the page, but he remains one of the most dependable runners in the field and looks sure to be involved in the finish once again.

The biggest threat could come from Gloriola, who produced a much-improved effort when finishing second over course and distance three weeks ago. That performance represented a clear return to form and suggested she may finally be beginning to fulfil some of the promise hinted at earlier in her career. As a lightly raced three-year-old, she retains considerably more upside than many of her rivals and is one of the few runners in the field who could still find meaningful improvement.

Veteran Masqool brings the strongest historical form figures into the race and drops into classified company after competing in handicaps from higher marks. The booking of Myla Coppins, whose 7lb claim significantly reduces the burden, is another positive. However, while Masqool remains capable of running well, his recent performances suggest he may no longer possess the edge that made him such a prolific winner in previous seasons.

One of the more interesting outsiders is Nautical Sky. She has shown flashes of ability in low-grade handicaps and now takes her first step into 0-50 classified company. Her runner-up effort at Wolverhampton earlier in the year demonstrated that she handles the surface, and this easier assignment could allow her to take another step forward.

Stacey Racey also enters calculations after a consistent spell on the all-weather during the winter. The concern is a 119-day absence, although the application of first-time cheekpieces suggests connections are looking to unlock further improvement.

Further down the field, Ignition continues to search for a first career success after nineteen defeats, while Blue Jammin, Jean’s Boy, and Rogue Soldier all need significant improvement on recent evidence to become serious contenders.

From a pace perspective, the race lacks an obvious front-running specialist. That could lead to a steadily run affair where tactical positioning becomes crucial. Horses capable of racing prominently without expending excessive energy may enjoy a significant advantage around Wolverhampton’s turning mile.

With that in mind, First Encounter’s proven course form makes him a logical favourite, but the most appealing profile belongs to Gloriola. Her latest effort hinted at untapped potential, and in a race dominated by exposed rivals, she looks the runner most likely to improve beyond her current rating.
