Tramore 20:00 Preview: Carthusian Can Capitalise on Class Drop in Competitive Staying Handicap

·

The feature staying handicap at Tramore (20:00) presents an intriguing clash between proven dual-purpose performers and several lightly raced Flat handicappers, with the 2m trip on good ground likely to place the emphasis firmly on stamina.

A field of eleven goes to post, and while several arrive with recent hurdle form, the race may be decided by which runner can combine staying power with enough untapped Flat potential.

Carthusian Appeals as the Progressive Option

The horse with the most scope for improvement appears to be Carthusian, the sole four-year-old in the field. Trained by Mrs John Harrington, he has contested stronger handicaps than this in recent starts and now drops into calmer waters.

His recent form figures do not leap off the page, but there are reasons for optimism. He was competing in deep Curragh handicaps and now returns against older exposed rivals. A first-time visor is fitted, suggesting connections are looking to unlock a little more improvement, and his profile remains that of a horse who has yet to reach his ceiling.

In a race lacking obvious improvers, that could prove decisive.

The Banger Doyle Sets the Standard

Veteran campaigner The Banger Doyle brings perhaps the strongest recent Flat form to the table after finishing third in a Leopardstown maiden last month. The ten-year-old remains remarkably competitive and has developed a reputation as one of Ireland’s toughest dual-purpose performers.

He has gone close on multiple occasions at Tramore and possesses the stamina required for this test. If reproducing his Leopardstown effort, he should once again be heavily involved in the finish.

The question is whether younger legs can find more improvement than he can.

Liberated Light Brings Winning Momentum

Recent course hurdle winner Liberated Light arrives in excellent heart after an emphatic success at Tramore in May. That victory confirmed both fitness and stamina, and he clearly enjoys the track.

The slight concern is that he has not been seen on the Flat for a considerable period. While his recent hurdle performances suggest he retains plenty of ability, switching disciplines is never straightforward and this represents a different challenge.

Nevertheless, course form counts for plenty at Tramore and he commands respect.

Mr Rango Looks the Each-Way Alternative

Those searching for value may be drawn towards Mr Rango. The eight-year-old produced one of the most encouraging efforts in the field when finishing second over an extended staying trip at Limerick last month at odds of 33-1.

That run suggested he stays well beyond today’s distance and hinted that he could be competitive from his current handicap mark. While not as fashionable as some of the market principals, he possesses the profile of a horse capable of outrunning his odds.

Race Shape Could Be Key

Several runners are comfortable racing prominently, including The Banger Doyle and Liberated Light, which should ensure an honest pace.

A genuinely run race would likely favour runners who can settle in midfield before delivering a late challenge, potentially playing into the hands of Carthusian and Mr Rango.

Verdict

This may not be a race packed with future stars, but it is a fascinating handicap featuring several reliable dual-purpose performers.

The proven performers deserve respect, particularly The Banger Doyle and Liberated Light, but Carthusian stands out as the runner with the greatest potential for improvement. His class drop, age profile and scope for progress make him the most appealing selection.
