A modest Class 6 classified sprint over 5f may not be the most glamorous contest on Tuesday’s Wolverhampton card, but it presents an intriguing clash between exposed handicappers and a handful of lightly raced three-year-olds who still have scope to improve.
The market is likely to focus on Havin A Flyer, who arrives with the strongest recent form. Rebecca Menzies’ filly has finished placed in two of her last three starts and posted the highest recent Racing Post Ratings in the field. Conditions look ideal, she has proven sprint form, and the booking of Oisin Murphy is another significant positive. The concern for supporters is that she remains a maiden after several opportunities and may once again find one too strong in the closing stages.
The most interesting runner from an improvement perspective is Fuseboard. Chelsea Banham’s gelding has shown very little in raw ratings so far, but his latest fourth at Lingfield was more encouraging than the bare result suggests. That run came after wind surgery and gelding operations, and this represents only his second start in handicap company. The drop from 7f to a sharp 5f is a notable move, suggesting connections are searching for improvement, and in a race lacking depth he could easily take a sizeable step forward.
Veteran campaigner Bishop’s Glory brings the most established all-weather credentials. His winter form included a Newcastle victory and several solid placed efforts, and a return to this level gives him every chance of being competitive. However, his recent turf runs have been disappointing and, as a fully exposed six-year-old, it is difficult to argue that he has much more to offer than his current rating suggests.
Baileys Ontherocks is another who deserves consideration. Her recent form figures are uninspiring, but the return to 5f on Tapeta and the booking of Billy Loughnane provide reasons for optimism. If she can rediscover the level she showed earlier in the year, she could outrun market expectations.
At bigger odds, Wondrous is the dark horse of the race. Michael Bell’s filly showed a little more promise when fourth at Yarmouth last time and now drops in trip while trying first-time headgear. In a race where several rivals are thoroughly exposed, even a small amount of improvement could put her firmly in the frame.
The remaining runners, Dontwaryboutathing and Rohini, have yet to produce form that makes them obvious contenders, although both are attempting new approaches and remain capable of better than they have shown to date.
Predicted Finishing Order
1. Havin A Flyer
2. Fuseboard
3. Baileys Ontherocks
4. Bishop’s Glory
5. Wondrous
6. Dontwaryboutathing
7. Rohini
Verdict
This looks a race where proven ability and potential improvement are closely matched. Havin A Flyer sets the standard on recent form and deserves favouritism, but she is vulnerable to an improver. Fuseboard fits that description best and rates the principal danger, while Wondrous appeals as the value outsider capable of surprising at a rewarding price.
Selection: Havin A Flyer
Main Danger: Fuseboard
Best Value: Wondrous
Betting Approach: Win bet on Havin A Flyer, with a smaller speculative play on Wondrous at bigger odds.
