The Group 2 Kingdom of Bahrain July Stakes at Newmarket may have attracted only four runners, but it remains one of the most intriguing juvenile contests of the summer, featuring a clash between proven Group-class form and exciting untapped potential.
At the head of the market is Adaay Of Scarlett, whose profile has strengthened with every start this season. Hugo Palmer’s colt won his first two races before stepping into Pattern company and producing a career-best effort when runner-up in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. That performance earned the strongest Racing Post Rating in the field and established him as one of the leading British-trained two-year-olds over six furlongs. With proven speed, toughness and Group-race experience, he brings the most solid credentials to Newmarket.
The horse attracting most attention from an improvement perspective is Inner City Blues. Charlie Appleby’s expensive €900,000 breeze-up purchase created a deep impression when winning on debut at York last month. Sent off a heavily backed favourite, he travelled with authority before quickening clear, and the form has already received multiple boosts from horses behind him. With only one run under his belt and a Group 1 entry already in place, he has the profile of a colt capable of making a significant leap forward.
Hickory Lad adds a different dimension to the race. Phillip Makin’s colt made all when landing the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom and is likely to be the pace angle once again. In a field of just four runners, obtaining an uncontested lead could make him dangerous. His latest victory suggested he is still progressing, but he now faces rivals with stronger form at the highest level and will need another career-best effort to repel them.
The outsider of the quartet is Persian Spring, trained by Richard Hannon. A winner of a competitive York novice earlier in the season, he endured a frustrating passage in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and never became involved. The return to six furlongs looks a positive, and his trainer has an excellent record in this race, but he must improve significantly on current ratings to challenge the leading pair.
From a tactical perspective, the race should be straightforward. Hickory Lad is expected to lead, with Adaay Of Scarlett and Inner City Blues tracking the pace before the contest develops into a sprint over the final two furlongs. In small-field Group races, tactical positioning is often crucial, but the quality of Adaay Of Scarlett’s Coventry Stakes form gives him a clear edge on what has been achieved so far.
The most likely outcome is a victory for Adaay Of Scarlett, whose proven Group 2 standard sets the benchmark. However, the race’s fascination lies in whether Inner City Blues can produce the level of improvement many expect after his impressive debut. If he does, the July Stakes could prove to be a stepping stone toward even bigger targets later in the season.
