14.35 Flann Sunna Sets the Standard in Competitive Ascot Juvenile Contest

·

A fascinating field of seven promising two-year-olds will line up for the Knight Frank Conditions Stakes over six furlongs at Ascot on Friday, with several unbeaten youngsters putting their reputations on the line in what looks a strong early-season juvenile contest.

The market is headed by Simon and Ed Crisford’s exciting colt Flann Sunna, who made an immediate impression when scoring on debut at Windsor last month. The son of Blue Point justified strong market support that day, travelling powerfully before asserting in convincing fashion. The form has already received a boost from a subsequent winner emerging from the race, while the colt’s Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes entry suggests connections hold him in high regard.

Despite carrying a 4lb penalty for that success, Flann Sunna appears to possess both the current ability and scope for improvement required to remain unbeaten. His debut Racing Post Rating already places him among the leading contenders, and natural progression could make him difficult to beat.

The chief threat may come from Mysterious Times, the Charlie Appleby-trained colt who has shown considerable promise in two starts without yet getting his head in front. A highly regarded 425,000-guinea yearling purchase, he shaped with significant promise when third at Sandown before producing an improved effort when narrowly denied at Newmarket over this trip. His latest Racing Post Rating is among the strongest in the field, and it would be no surprise if a more polished performance saw him take another sizeable step forward.

One of the most intriguing runners at bigger odds is Persazz, who produced the highest published Racing Post Rating in the field when making a winning debut at Ripon. William Knight’s youngster displayed professionalism and determination to score at the first attempt, and with only one run under his belt there is every chance that his best days remain ahead of him. If he progresses as expected, he could easily outrun his market position and emerge as a serious challenger to the principals.

Washington Royale is another newcomer to racecourse action who warrants respect. Michael Appleby’s colt shaped encouragingly when fourth on debut at York, staying on well enough to suggest he has both ability and potential. While he may require further improvement to trouble the leading trio, his opening effort hinted that he could develop into a useful performer.

The unbeaten Peaceful Warrior also enters calculations after making all to win a valuable Class 2 contest at Yarmouth. That victory demonstrated both speed and determination, but a 6lb penalty and a 51-day absence make this a stiffer assignment. Ascot’s competitive six furlongs will provide a more searching examination of his credentials.

Richard Hannon’s Keep Grating and Charlie Pike’s No More Pino appear to have more on their plates. Both remain capable of progressing from limited experience, but they will need significant improvement to trouble the market leaders.

From a tactical perspective, the race should be run at a genuine pace. Peaceful Warrior is likely to adopt positive tactics again, while Flann Sunna and Persazz have also shown enough early speed to secure prominent positions. Such a setup could create opportunities for a horse capable of settling and finishing strongly, a scenario that may suit Mysterious Times.

Ultimately, Flann Sunna sets the benchmark after his impressive debut success and deserves favouritism. However, this looks a race rich in potential rather than proven form, and Persazz appeals as a particularly interesting value alternative should he build on his promising Ripon victory.
