15.00 Wine Dark Sea Faces Stiffest Test Yet in Newmarket Heritage Handicap

·

The £51,540 Betway Trophy Heritage Handicap at Newmarket on Friday looks set to revolve around one horse: Wine Dark Sea, the rapidly improving Harry Charlton-trained four-year-old who arrives seeking a third successive victory and carrying what could prove to be a very lenient penalty.

The son of Ulysses has developed at an impressive rate this season, winning competitive handicaps at Ascot and Carlisle in increasingly authoritative fashion. His latest success was particularly striking, as he routed a useful field by a wide margin at Carlisle, earning a future handicap mark 11lb higher than the rating he effectively competes from here.

That leaves him potentially very well treated despite carrying a 6lb penalty, and on ratings he sets a clear standard. The one remaining question is whether he can reproduce that level over a new trip of 1m6f. There are, however, reasons for optimism. He shapes as though further improvement remains possible, while his pedigree offers encouragement that the extra distance will be within range.

While Wine Dark Sea deserves favouritism, this is unlikely to be a straightforward procession.

Valedictory Looks the Principal Threat

The most obvious danger is Valedictory, representing the powerful John and Thady Gosden stable and partnered by William Buick. Lightly raced and still open to significant improvement, he appeared to find his ideal conditions when stepped up to 1m6f at Goodwood in May.

That performance suggested there was considerably more in reserve than the official margin implied, and a subsequent 5lb rise may underestimate his true ability. With only six career starts under his belt, Valedictory remains one of the few runners in the field capable of matching the favourite’s progression profile.

If Wine Dark Sea fails to fully see out the trip, Valedictory is the horse most likely to capitalise.

Goblet Of Fire Brings Proven Course-and-Distance Form

For each-way players, Goblet Of Fire makes considerable appeal. Nicky Henderson’s six-year-old has long mixed Flat and jumps racing effectively and produced a career-best Flat performance when landing a valuable handicap over this course and distance in May.

The handicapper reacted with a 7lb rise, but the manner of that victory suggested he was value for more than the winning margin. Proven at Newmarket, effective on quick ground and arriving fresh after a short break, he possesses one of the most solid profiles in the race.

Veterans Need Revival

Last year’s winner Oneforthegutter returns seeking a repeat success and is now 4lb lower than when successful twelve months ago. However, his subsequent form has been disappointing, and he will need to rediscover his best after a sequence of below-par efforts.

Similarly, Roaring Legend and Real Dream have shown enough ability in the past to be competitive at this level but arrive with questions to answer. Roaring Legend, in particular, has undergone multiple wind procedures and was well beaten on his latest start.

Beylerbeyi Reliable but Vulnerable

The admirable Beylerbeyi, winner of last year’s Cesarewitch, continues to perform with credit in major staying handicaps. His consistency and stamina are unquestioned, but from a handicapping perspective he may be vulnerable to younger, progressive rivals carrying less mileage.

A strong pace and a truly run race would enhance his chances, but Friday’s contest does not appear overloaded with front-runners.

Race Shape Could Suit the Market Leaders

The likely pace scenario suggests an even gallop rather than an all-out stamina test. That may prove advantageous for horses with tactical speed, particularly Wine Dark Sea and Valedictory, both of whom can travel prominently before quickening.

Hold-up performers such as Beylerbeyi and Oneforthegutter could find themselves dependent on luck and race tempo, especially if the leaders are allowed to dictate proceedings.

Verdict

This year’s Betway Trophy has attracted a fascinating blend of proven stayers and rapidly improving handicappers, but the profile of Wine Dark Sea is difficult to oppose. His Carlisle victory hinted at a horse still significantly ahead of the handicapper, and the future rating allocated to him strongly supports that view.

Valedictory rates the most serious challenger and may emerge as a Pattern-class performer in time, while Goblet Of Fire looks the standout each-way candidate given his proven course-and-distance credentials.
