A fascinating Class 2 fillies’ novice over six furlongs at York brings together a blend of promising raced fillies and several intriguing newcomers, making the 15:20 one of the more informative juvenile contests of the afternoon.
The market is headed by last-time-out winner Bear Lee, who arrives with the strongest piece of form on offer after overcoming a slow start to score comfortably at Musselburgh ten days ago. The daughter of Kodi Bear showed a sharp turn of foot on that occasion and earned the best Racing Post Rating in the field. However, she must now shoulder a 4lb penalty and faces a noticeably deeper contest than the maiden she won.
That opens the door for Betty Boop, who appeals as the most likely improver in the line-up. Richard Hughes’ filly caught the eye on her debut at Lingfield when slowly into stride before staying on strongly into third over five furlongs. The form has already received a boost, and the step up to six furlongs on York’s long straight looks tailor-made for a filly who shaped as though she would appreciate further. With normal second-start progression, she could take a significant step forward.
Among the newcomers, Gladys Pugh demands considerable respect. A 200,000-guinea daughter of Mehmas from the Kevin Ryan yard, she possesses a pedigree packed with speed and comes from a stable enjoying another productive season with its juveniles. Any positive market signals would be difficult to ignore.
Lady Titania is another debutante worthy of close attention. Trained by Karl Burke, whose two-year-olds continue to operate at a high strike rate, she is bred to be useful and represents a yard that rarely sends one to York without purpose. She could easily outperform her lack of experience.
Richard Hannon’s Elevating also has an attractive pedigree and may prove better than market expectations, while the Fahey pair Kirton Angel and Striking Force both have enough speed influences in their breeding to suggest they could be competitive if ready first time.
Of the runners with experience, Naval Cop and Roman Crystal look to have more to find. Both should improve for their initial outings, but the level of progress required appears substantial in a race containing several potentially smart fillies.
From a tactical perspective, the race should be run at an honest pace. Bear Lee is likely to be prominent, while several well-bred newcomers may also show early speed. That scenario could suit a strong finisher, which adds further appeal to Betty Boop’s profile after her eye-catching late work on debut.
Prediction
1. Betty Boop
2. Bear Lee
3. Gladys Pugh
4. Lady Titania
Verdict
Bear Lee sets the standard on form, but Betty Boop shaped like a filly with considerably more to offer and is taken to improve past the favourite now stepped up to six furlongs. Gladys Pugh is feared most among the newcomers, while Lady Titania is another debutante capable of making an immediate impact.
