15.35 Precise Chases Fifth Group 1 in High-Class Renewal of the Falmouth Stakes

·

The Tattersalls Sceptre Sessions Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket on Friday promises a fascinating clash between proven Group 1 class and emerging talent, with seven fillies and mares lining up for one of the premier mile contests of the summer.

Heading the market is Aidan O’Brien’s outstanding three-year-old Precise, who arrives seeking a fifth Group 1 victory and a third consecutive top-level success following impressive wins in both the Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

After disappointing as favourite in the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas on her seasonal return, Precise has emphatically silenced any doubts. Her Coronation Stakes victory was particularly impressive, overcoming a slow start and a wide trip before asserting her superiority late on. With Ryan Moore again in the saddle and conditions expected to suit perfectly, she sets a formidable standard.

The biggest threat may come from Blue Bolt, who has done little wrong in her four-year-old campaign. Andrew Balding’s filly has won both starts this season and took a significant step forward when landing the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot. Lightly raced and still open to improvement, she appears ready to test herself at the highest level and could provide the favourite with her sternest examination.

One of the more intriguing runners is Balantina, the Donnacha O’Brien-trained Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner. Her fifth-place finish in the Coronation Stakes was better than it may appear on paper after she became warm before the race and weakened only in the closing stages. With that seasonal debut now behind her, a sharper performance could be expected, making her an attractive value proposition against the market leaders.

Jancis has developed into a high-class performer this season and arrives on the back of a career-best effort when runner-up to Blue Bolt at Royal Ascot. Importantly, she meets that rival on level weights this time and her consistency ensures she cannot be dismissed. If reproducing her Ascot form, she has every chance of challenging for the places once again.

The three-year-old pair Evolutionist and Venetian Lace both return to a mile after unsuccessful attempts at longer distances. Evolutionist was an excellent second in the 1,000 Guineas before failing to settle in the Prix de Diane, while Venetian Lace was not suited by conditions in the Oaks. Both possess enough ability to be competitive, although each must find improvement to trouble the principals.

Completing the field is Venosa, who appears likely to adopt pacemaking duties for the Ballydoyle team. While her chances of victory look remote, her presence could have an important influence on the tactical shape of the contest.

With only seven runners declared, the pace is unlikely to be searching, placing an emphasis on tactical speed and positioning. Such a scenario should play into the hands of horses with a proven turn of foot, particularly Precise and Blue Bolt, who both possess the ability to quicken decisively when required.

The Falmouth Stakes has often served as a stage for elite milers to cement their reputations, and Friday’s renewal looks set to follow that tradition. Precise arrives with the strongest credentials and deserves her place at the head of the market, but Blue Bolt’s progressive profile and Balantina’s untapped potential ensure this is far from a one-horse race.
