16.55 Amazing Journey Can Continue His Rise In Competitive Ascot Sprint Handicap

·

The 6f Savills Handicap at Ascot (16:55) looks one of the most intriguing betting races on Friday’s card, bringing together a mix of progressive three-year-olds, established handicappers and several runners attempting to bounce back to their best.

With good-to-firm ground forecast and plenty of early pace on offer, the race could be set up perfectly for a horse capable of finishing strongly off a solid gallop.

Amazing Journey Sets The Standard

The horse arriving with arguably the strongest recent profile is Amazing Journey, who has looked a different proposition since returning to six furlongs this summer.

After winning decisively at Kempton, Jamie Osborne’s three-year-old followed up with an excellent second at Epsom, where he arguably did not enjoy the smoothest passage around the unique track. Despite that, he still produced a career-best effort and is due to be raised by the handicapper.

His proven effectiveness on quick ground, progressive profile and likely strong pace scenario all point towards another big run. As one of the few runners still open to significant improvement, he looks the most likely winner.

Ray Mon Dough Brings Untapped Potential

While Amazing Journey brings the strongest established form, Ray Mon Dough could be the horse with the greatest upside.

The Oliver Cole-trained colt has raced only three times and makes his handicap debut from a mark of 90. His debut victory at Lingfield was visually impressive and he returned to form when runner-up in novice company on good ground in May.

There is a possibility that his opening handicap mark underestimates his true ability and, in a race containing several exposed rivals, that makes him a fascinating contender. If handling the step into a competitive handicap, he could easily outperform market expectations.

Diligently Looks A Solid Each-Way Option

Diligently arrives following a convincing success at Windsor and the form of that race has received multiple boosts since, with several runners performing well on subsequent starts.

Clive Cox’s four-year-old is proven on fast ground, remains attractively weighted despite a small rise in the ratings and appears to be peaking at the right time. He may lack the improvement potential of the leading three-year-olds but his consistency and suitability to conditions make him a strong each-way proposition.

Coul Angel Remains Dangerous

Coul Angel has been a reliable performer throughout the season and again shaped well when runner-up at Windsor last time.

Michael Appleby’s gelding has often performed with credit in stronger company than this and his previous Ascot form is another positive. While he may not possess the same scope for improvement as some younger rivals, his current level of form puts him firmly in the mix.

Questions To Answer For Market Rivals

Fast Track Harry is likely to attract support based on his winter all-weather performances, including a pair of career-best victories. However, he has struggled to reproduce those figures on turf and arrives with something to prove despite dropping in class.

So Darn Hot is another capable handicapper whose current mark gives him a chance, but his recent form has been inconsistent and he will need to bounce back from a disappointing Royal Ascot effort.

Meanwhile, course winner Bolo Neighs and recent scorer Another Abbot both possess the ability to get involved if returning to their best form.

Pace Could Be Decisive

Several runners like to race prominently, including Ray Mon Dough, Fast Track Harry and Twilight Jet, suggesting the race could be run at a stronger-than-average tempo.

That scenario may favour horses capable of settling just behind the speed before delivering a late challenge in the final furlong. Ascot’s stiff six furlongs often rewards stamina as much as outright speed, particularly on quick ground.

Verdict

This looks a race where progression may prove more important than exposed handicap form.

Amazing Journey arrives with the strongest recent credentials, remains open to further improvement and appears ideally suited by conditions. Ray Mon Dough is respected as the most dangerous improver, while Diligently appeals as the safest each-way option in a highly competitive field.
