17.05 Ancient State Chasing Hat-Trick in Competitive York Sprint Handicap

·

The William Hill Keep Your Raceday Positive Handicap (17:05) looks one of the most competitive races on York’s Friday card, with a mix of seasoned sprint handicappers and progressive younger runners set to battle over the minimum trip on good-to-firm ground.

A field of 13 runners goes to post for the Class 4 contest, and while several arrive in strong recent form, the race could be shaped as much by its pace dynamics as by the ratings.

Strong Pace Expected

The early speed is likely to come from the improving three-year-old I’m Dan Dare, who has built his recent success around aggressive front-running tactics. He is unlikely to get things entirely his own way, however, with Al Hussar, Brazen Bolt and Ancient State all capable of racing prominently.

That combination points towards a genuinely run five furlongs, a scenario that could favour runners sitting just behind the leaders before delivering a late challenge inside the final furlong.

Ancient State the Progressive Force

The horse attracting most attention is Ancient State, whose form has improved dramatically since the fitting of an eyeshield earlier this season.

The four-year-old arrives seeking a third consecutive victory after wins at Newmarket and Lingfield, and both performances suggested he remains ahead of the handicapper despite a higher mark. His latest success came with plenty in hand, and the manner in which he travelled through the race hinted that further progress may still be forthcoming.

While this represents a rise in class and depth of opposition, he is one of the few runners in the field whose profile suggests genuine untapped improvement.

Eternal Sunshine Returning to Form

Last season’s Portland Handicap heroine Eternal Sunshine has begun to rediscover her best form after a difficult start to the campaign.

Her runner-up effort at Doncaster last week was a significant step forward, and a return to Class 4 company gives her a realistic opportunity to add another victory. With proven form in stronger races than this, she possesses one of the strongest pieces of established sprint form in the field.

If the anticipated strong pace materialises, she could be one of the biggest beneficiaries.

Emerald Harmony Brings Consistency

Few horses arrive in better current form than Emerald Harmony, who won comfortably at Thirsk before following up with a strong second in a Class 3 contest at Doncaster.

Paul Midgley’s mare has become a model of consistency this summer and should enjoy conditions. Drawn in stall one, she could secure an economical trip close to the pace and looks another likely to be involved at the finish.

I’m Dan Dare Faces Toughest Test

The most intriguing runner is undoubtedly I’m Dan Dare.

The three-year-old has improved rapidly since joining Mark Walford, winning twice and finishing second over this course and distance. His latest success at Newcastle suggested there is more to come, but he now faces older and more battle-hardened rivals while carrying a 6lb higher mark.

His natural speed ensures he will be competitive for a long way, though whether he can dominate this stronger field remains the key question.

Experienced Sprinters Cannot Be Ignored

Several seasoned campaigners remain firmly in the mix.

Spring Is Sprung continues to run consistently at a higher level than today’s contest and arrives after a pair of solid efforts in defeat. Al Hussar has been remarkably reliable throughout the season, while last year’s winner Brazen Bolt returns to the race from a mark that still gives him every chance if able to recapture his peak form.

Verdict

This appears a race where current momentum and race shape could prove decisive. Ancient State is the runner with the most compelling combination of recent form and improvement potential, while Eternal Sunshine and Emerald Harmony look the principal dangers among the more established handicappers.

With a strong pace likely to be on offer, expect the finish to favour those capable of settling just off the speed before producing a decisive late challenge.
