A fascinating four-runner nursery opens the card at Hamilton, with proven course form, unexposed handicap debutants and differing pace profiles all adding intrigue to this competitive juvenile contest.
Call Nicki sets the standard after finally getting off the mark over this course and distance three weeks ago. Tim Easterby’s filly has been remarkably consistent, running to a similar level in each of her five starts, and her strong-finishing victory here on good-to-firm ground suggests today’s conditions will suit perfectly. A 4lb rise asks a little more of her, but she looks sure to run her race once again and brings the strongest established form into the contest.
The biggest threat could come from Caturra Lights, who makes his handicap debut after showing plenty of promise in novice company. His latest effort at Chester is easily forgiven after a difficult draw left him poorly positioned throughout, while his previous runs suggested he possesses enough ability to be competitive from an opening mark of 76. In a race lacking obvious pace, he may be able to secure a favourable position near the front and could have more improvement to come than his rivals.
Tango Hotel arrives on the back of a maiden success at Ffos Las and has improved with every start. George Scott’s filly travelled strongly and pulled clear on soft ground that day, although today’s quicker surface presents a different challenge. If she can reproduce her recent progress on good-to-firm going, she remains firmly in the mix.
The outsider Or Another has shown ability in maiden company but disappointed on handicap debut at Yarmouth last week, where he raced awkwardly and weakened quickly. The return to Hamilton and a change of headgear could help, but he has questions to answer after that latest effort.
From a tactical perspective, the small field could make this a steadily run affair, potentially favouring those racing prominently. That scenario may play into the hands of Caturra Lights, whose early speed could prove a significant asset around Hamilton’s sharp five furlongs.
Verdict: Call Nicki brings the most solid credentials and deserves favouritism, but handicap debutant Caturra Lights appeals as the runner with the greatest scope for improvement and could prove the value alternative in a race where tactical positioning may be crucial.
