A competitive Class 5 sprint for three-year-olds sees nine runners go to post over Thirsk’s sharp five furlongs on good-to-firm ground, and the race looks likely to be run at an honest pace with several of the principals happiest racing prominently.
Simba’s Pride heads the market after a productive campaign that has already yielded two victories. Michael Dods’ gelding arrives in good form following a solid third over 6f at this track earlier this month and now drops back to the minimum trip. His recent consistency and strong speed figures make him the one they all have to beat, although the slight concern is whether today’s race develops quickly enough to play fully to his strengths.
Top weight Straight Ahead looks one of the main dangers. Craig Lidster’s runner won twice on the Newcastle all-weather at the end of last season and shaped encouragingly when fourth over this course and distance on his reappearance. His latest run in a stronger York handicap can be forgiven and this drop in grade gives him a major chance of returning to form.
One of the more intriguing runners is Angel Numbers, who makes her stable debut for Ruth Carr after changing hands recently. Although winless since her debut success, she has repeatedly shown enough ability to suggest a race of this nature is within reach. Her second at Bath on firm ground earlier in the season stands out, and any improvement from the yard switch would make her a serious contender.
Yellow Diamonds has been holding her form well in stronger company and should appreciate returning to a less demanding contest. She lacks the obvious upside of some rivals but looks capable of running another solid race and has strong place credentials.
Empress Olivia is harder to assess after a disappointing York effort when reportedly suffering a nosebleed. Prior to that she had been running consistently and her Ripon victory in April demonstrated she possesses the ability to be competitive from her current mark if fully recovered.
Of the remainder, Under The Radar returns to the scene of his only career victory and could improve for the switch back to Thirsk, while Vinciamo continues to threaten without quite delivering and may again find one or two too strong. Houndhill and Davorge Nation both need significant rebounds after recent struggles.
The likely race shape points towards those racing close to the pace holding an advantage, and that may play perfectly into the hands of the market leaders.
Verdict: Simba’s Pride sets the standard on recent form and is the most likely winner, but Angel Numbers appeals as the most interesting value alternative on her first start for a new stable. Straight Ahead is respected and could prove the biggest threat if bouncing back from his York disappointment.
