A competitive Class 6 handicap with several exposed handicappers taking on a handful of lightly raced runners who still have scope for improvement.
The market is headed by Captain Cess, who arrives in solid form after finishing second at Chepstow and third on his stable debut for Declan Carroll at Wetherby. A ten-race maiden, he nevertheless looks well treated on his current mark and the return to 7f should suit. With a favourable pace setup likely to allow him to race prominently, he sets a strong standard.
Coconut Bay is the proven winner in the field and commands respect despite being a seven-year-old mare. She won four races last season, including one from a mark 9lb higher than today’s, and has returned to form with two encouraging efforts in recent weeks. Her experience and consistency make her a major player once again, although she may have less improvement left than some of her rivals.
One of the more interesting contenders is Night Emperor, who shaped much better than the bare result when fourth in a competitive 18-runner handicap over 6f at this track last time. He did well from an unfavourable draw and now steps back up to 7f, a move that could unlock further progress. Still relatively unexposed after only nine starts, he looks capable of taking another step forward.
Emerald Army is another with strong claims. A previous course winner, he has twice finished runner-up this season and remains competitively handicapped. However, his hold-up style could leave him vulnerable if the race develops into a steadily run affair.
Among the younger horses, Forever Twenty appeals as a potential improver. The three-year-old has shown flashes of ability in stronger company and receives a useful age allowance against older rivals. If continuing her progression, she could easily outrun her current odds.
The wildcard in the field is Crown Of Dreams, who makes her handicap debut after just three starts. Her form figures do not immediately stand out, but the booking of Silvestre De Sousa catches the eye and there is every chance she can improve significantly now entering handicap company from what could prove a workable opening mark.
The likely race shape suggests only a modest pace, which should favour those racing prominently. That scenario could play perfectly into the hands of Captain Cess, while Night Emperor looks poised to benefit from the extra furlong and may emerge as the main danger.
