A competitive six-runner handicap rounds off the card at Thirsk, with recent course form looking a key asset in a race where several arrive with solid credentials but limited room for error.
Harswell Ruby sets the standard on recent form. Roger Fell’s mare scored over this course and distance in April and returned to form with an excellent second at Pontefract nine days ago. The return of cheekpieces appeared to have a positive effect and, racing from the same mark, she looks sure to be involved if reproducing that effort. Conditions hold no fears and another prominent showing is expected.
The chief threat may come from Military Leader, who has improved markedly this season. After opening his account at Southwell, he followed up over this course and distance before posting two further creditable placed efforts. His recent Chester second was particularly encouraging given the demands of that track, and a return to a more conventional mile around Thirsk could see further progress from a horse who still appears on an upward curve.
Capital Guarantee is an intriguing contender. A multiple winner last season, including over this course and distance, he has struggled to hit the same heights in 2026. However, there were signs of encouragement at Beverley last time and a drop back into Class 5 company could help spark a revival. If returning anywhere near his best form, he is handicapped to be competitive.
Veteran Barley has been knocking on the door without quite getting his head in front, finishing placed on each of his last four starts. His consistency commands respect, although he may require the principals to underperform if he is to end a losing run stretching back more than two years.
Degale and Cosmos Raj have questions to answer. Both are now well treated on some of their historical form, but recent performances suggest they need a significant resurgence to trouble the market leaders.
The likely pace scenario favours those racing prominently, which could play into the hands of Military Leader and Harswell Ruby. In a small field where tactical positioning may prove crucial, both arrive in the best current form and look the pair most likely to fight out the finish.
Verdict: Harswell Ruby has the strongest recent profile and is taken to confirm her consistency, although the progressive Military Leader rates a serious danger and may offer slightly greater value at the prices.
