15:07 Killarney – BoyleSports Daily Money Back Meeting Handicap Chase (2m1f)

·

A competitive nine-runner handicap chase takes centre stage at Killarney, where proven handicap performers meet a handful of progressive types on good ground over an extended two miles. The contest looks likely to be run at a genuine pace, with several prominent racers in the line-up, and that could set up a fascinating tactical battle between established class and emerging form.

The class angle is headed by Jasko Des Dames, whose recent efforts in major British and Irish handicap chases stand out. Fifth in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham before finishing fourth in the Red Rum Handicap Chase at Aintree, Henry de Bromhead’s gelding drops significantly in grade here and returns to conditions that suit. If reproducing either of those performances, he sets a high standard.

Stablemate Special Cadeau also arrives with stronger form than the race average. Although winless since his chasing debut success, he has consistently competed in valuable handicaps and was a creditable third at Ascot earlier in the season. The return to calmer waters and the assistance of Dylan Whelan’s valuable claim make him a major player despite top weight.

The progressive threat comes from Mic Drop, who arrives seeking a hat-trick after victories at Limerick and Wexford. His latest success was achieved with authority and another bold front-running effort appears likely. The concern is whether a rise in class and a higher handicap mark leave him vulnerable against more seasoned rivals, but his profile suggests there may still be improvement to come.

Last year’s winner Gaelic Arc has rediscovered his best form at exactly the right time. Successful at Punchestown before going down only a neck at Kilbeggan, the veteran looks poised for another prominent showing. His aggressive style should ensure he is heavily involved from an early stage and he has already proven his liking for this track and race.

Femme Magnifique has enjoyed a revival since joining her current yard, winning at Tramore before finishing second behind Mic Drop at Wexford. She remains well treated on some of her older hurdle form and should once again give a good account, though she may need a little more improvement to reverse recent placings.

Another former winner of this race, Dreal Deal, cannot be dismissed despite advancing years. The eleven-year-old has shown renewed enthusiasm in veterans’ company this spring and arrives on the back of solid efforts at Haydock and Ballinrobe. Experience and proven course form make him an attractive each-way contender.

Of the remainder, Drumgill is interesting dropping back in trip after several below-par runs over longer distances, while The Banger Doyle returns from some encouraging Flat performances but needs to prove he retains his old chasing ability. No Flies On Him has ability but arrives with questions to answer after a disappointing reappearance and may find conditions quicker than ideal.

The likely pace scenario revolves around Gaelic Arc and Mic Drop, with several others happy to sit close behind. That should ensure an honest gallop, potentially favouring horses capable of travelling strongly just off the speed. On balance, Jasko Des Dames looks the horse with the strongest overall profile, while Mic Drop remains the most intriguing improver and Special Cadeau appeals as a value alternative in a race rich with competitive depth.
