14:25 Newbury – Pertemps Network Handicap (2m½f, Class 2) – Race Preview

·

A competitive but compact field of seven lines up for this valuable staying handicap, where proven stamina and tactical positioning could prove decisive on Newbury’s good-to-firm surface. With only a handful of runners, the pace is unlikely to be relentless, placing extra emphasis on racecraft and the ability to quicken at the right moment.

Ride The Thunder heads the market after another admirable effort in the Northumberland Plate. Although still searching for a first handicap success, Roger Varian’s gelding has been remarkably consistent in stronger company and now drops into a much less competitive contest. His proven stamina and high Racing Post Rating make him the benchmark, but he may need the leaders to go hard enough to bring his finishing kick into play.

The one that appeals most is Bahadur, who has quietly developed into a smart staying handicapper this season. His victory at Goodwood was followed by a respectable effort in the Northumberland Plate, where he raced prominently throughout before keeping on well. With William Buick taking the ride and a race likely to be run at a sensible tempo, he looks ideally positioned to dictate or sit close to the pace before striking for home.

Few arrive in better recent form than Baileys Khelstar, who bids for a hat-trick after back-to-back victories at Newbury and Kempton. He clearly enjoys this track and the prevailing ground, while a 3lb rise may not be enough to halt his momentum. Another bold showing looks likely if he can continue his recent progression.

Duraji is perhaps the most intriguing outsider. His excellent third in the Chester Cup showed he retains plenty of ability, although his Royal Ascot run was too bad to be true. If forgiven that performance, he possesses the class to outrun generous odds and could be dangerous if allowed to dominate from the front.

Both Team Player and Shrimp Shady have pieces of form that entitle them to respect. Team Player excelled earlier in the season, notably in the Chester Cup, but must bounce back from a below-par effort in the Northumberland Plate. Shrimp Shady has steadily improved since switching to staying trips and remains capable of further progress despite lacking the standout ratings of the principals.

Last year’s winner Almuhit returns to defend his crown from a lower mark than when successful twelve months ago. While his Flat form has been mixed this season, his recent second over this course and distance hinted that he is returning to form, and another prominent ride could see him stay involved for a long way.

With only seven runners, tactics may ultimately decide the outcome. A controlled pace would favour those racing handily, making Bahadur the horse to beat, while Ride The Thunder remains the solid benchmark and Baileys Khelstar looks the biggest threat after his recent winning sequence. For those seeking value, Duraji appeals as the dark horse capable of making his presence felt if bouncing back to his Chester Cup performance.

Selection: Bahadur
Main danger: Ride The Thunder
