A competitive eight-runner handicap sees a mix of progressive younger horses and battle-hardened handicappers clash over Ripon’s demanding 1m4f, with a tactical contest appearing likely on good ground.
Salamanca City heads the shortlist after taking her form to a new level this season. The James Fanshawe-trained mare arrives seeking a hat-trick of wins following victories at Yarmouth and Goodwood, either side of a solid second at Lingfield. She has proven herself at today’s distance, is versatile regarding ground conditions, and still gives the impression there could be more to come despite another rise in the weights.
The chief threat may come from Yafreh, who is arguably the most progressive runner in the field. The lightly raced three-year-old has improved with every outing and shaped particularly well when finishing a close second on his handicap debut at Thirsk. That form has already received a boost with the winner scoring again, and receiving a generous weight-for-age allowance, Yafreh has the profile of a colt capable of taking another significant step forward.
Elsass is respected despite a disappointing effort at Newmarket last time. Prior to that setback, Charlie Johnston’s gelding had won impressively on both starts since being gelded and remains unexposed over middle distances. If forgiven his latest run, he has the ability to bounce back into serious contention.
Consistency is the strength of Prince Of The Seas, who has produced two solid placed efforts in recent weeks and should again be competitive if reproducing that level. He may lack the scope for improvement of some rivals but looks set for another honest performance.
Few know Ripon better than Spioradalta, whose remarkable record at the track includes four consecutive victories. While stepping back up to 1m4f poses a slight question, his proven liking for the course ensures he cannot be dismissed, particularly if allowed an easy lead.
Veterans Star Harbour, Per Contra and Haku all have pieces of form that give them chances on their best efforts, but each arrives with questions to answer. Star Harbour continues to run with credit without winning, Per Contra has become difficult to catch right despite an attractive handicap mark, while Haku returns from a lengthy absence and has yet to prove himself on turf.
With no obvious confirmed front-runner, the pace may be only even, placing an emphasis on tactical speed and positioning. That scenario could suit runners who travel strongly just behind the leaders before producing a late challenge.
Verdict
Salamanca City sets the standard on recent form and rates the one to beat, but the biggest danger may be the unexposed Yafreh, whose profile suggests his current mark could underestimate his ability. Elsass is respected as the chief danger among the exposed horses if rebounding from his Newmarket disappointment.
