A competitive seven-runner novice handicap hurdle looks set to provide an intriguing clash between proven course form and untapped potential. With the ground riding good to firm, previous Stratford experience and the ability to travel strongly on a sound surface could prove decisive.

Stellarmasterpiece arrives as the horse to beat after back-to-back victories over hurdles at Stratford. Both wins came on fast ground, and his latest success over today’s trip suggested he is thriving under these conditions. A further rise in the weights asks another question, but with Sean Bowen in the saddle and the Micky Hammond yard enjoying a productive spell, he sets the standard.

The chief threat may come from Get A Superstar, who switches back to hurdles after a successful spell over fences. A dual chase winner earlier this summer, he wasn’t disgraced when third over an inadequate three miles last time and now returns to a more suitable distance from what looks a workable hurdle mark. If reproducing his recent chase form, he has the class to make life difficult for the favourite.

Northern Rose is yet to get her head in front over hurdles but continues to run with credit around Stratford. A close second over two miles here last month confirmed she handles the track and the prevailing conditions well, while today’s step back up in trip should suit. She looks a solid contender for the places once again.

The race’s most intriguing runner is Mystic Wind. The four-year-old represents Dan Skelton and makes his handicap debut after three educational runs in novice company. Stepping up in distance and fitted with a first-time tongue-tie, he possesses considerably more improvement potential than many of his rivals and could take a sizeable step forward if responding positively to the new conditions.

Kotgar has shown only flashes of ability in handicaps and now tries a visor after cheekpieces failed to spark improvement. He needs to find considerably more to trouble the principals, while Ghost Pepper, returning from a lengthy absence for a new stable and racing from out of the handicap, faces a difficult task. Hopjes remains lightly raced over hurdles but has yet to show enough to suggest he can make an immediate impact at this level.

With no obvious confirmed front-runner, the race could develop into a steadily run tactical affair, placing extra emphasis on positioning and turn of foot. That scenario should suit Stellarmasterpiece, whose proven ability to travel strongly around Stratford makes him the most likely winner. Get A Superstar rates the principal danger on raw ability, while Mystic Wind is the dark horse capable of outrunning his odds if unlocking the improvement his profile promises.
