Stratford 15:23 – Patrick’s 60th Celebration Handicap Hurdle (2m6f, Class 4)

·

A fascinating five-runner handicap hurdle where tactics could prove just as important as ability. With only a small field, there should be no hiding place, and the likely pace set by Campaign Trail promises an honest gallop on Stratford’s good-to-firm surface.

The market is headed by Charging Thunder, who steps up in trip after shaping with promise over shorter distances. An accomplished stayer on the Flat, James Owen’s gelding has yet to fully translate that ability over hurdles, but today’s 2m6f could unlock further improvement. Sean Bowen takes the ride, and if the extra distance brings out the best in him, he has the potential to take this race.

The biggest threat may come from Campaign Trail, whose commanding front-running success at Hereford two starts ago remains the strongest recent piece of hurdle form in the field. His latest run ended in a disappointing pull-up, but if that effort is forgiven and he returns to his previous level, he looks attractively priced and is capable of making every yard.

Course specialist Lion Of The Desert arrives in excellent form after winning over this course and distance last month. Three victories since the spring underline his consistency, and although a higher handicap mark asks another question, he is almost certain to give another honest account and should again be involved at the finish.

Parikarma has been knocking on the door in lower-grade handicaps and is proven on fast ground, but she may find this slightly stronger company stretches her. Hillview, once a useful performer, has struggled to recapture his old form and needs a significant revival after a series of below-par efforts.

With a likely solid pace and proven stayers in opposition, this could develop into a test of stamina over the final half mile. Charging Thunder possesses the greatest scope for improvement now tackling a more suitable trip, while Campaign Trail has the strongest value credentials if bouncing back from his latest disappointment. Lion Of The Desert’s consistency makes him difficult to leave out of calculations, ensuring what promises to be a competitive and tactical contest despite the small field.

Prediction: Charging Thunder to edge out Campaign Trail, with Lion Of The Desert completing the placings.
