The pace looks set to be honest, with several runners happiest racing prominently, which could play into the hands of those capable of settling just off the leaders before delivering a late challenge.

Veblen Good heads the shortlist after bouncing back to form with a solid third at Thirsk. A winner on his stable debut for David O’Meara earlier in the season, he returns to his optimum 6f on fast ground and looks well placed to capitalise if reproducing his best form. His ability to finish strongly could prove decisive in what should be a well-run race.

Veteran Jordan Electrics remains a major threat despite advancing years. Although without a victory since his excellent 2024 campaign, there have been encouraging signs in recent starts, including a creditable third at Hamilton on Friday. First-time cheekpieces and a 2lb lower mark add further interest, and another bold showing would come as no surprise.

Few arrive in more consistent form than Lord Roxby, whose York success in May has been backed up by two solid efforts in stronger company. His reliable profile and useful 3lb claim make him a leading contender once again, while Azure Zain cannot be dismissed after landing a competitive Ascot handicap earlier this season. He disappointed last time but is capable of bouncing back under his preferred conditions.

One to watch at bigger odds is Gentle George. His three handicap runs this year have been underwhelming, but he showed useful juvenile form, now drops back to 6f and still has the potential to improve as a three-year-old. If the return to sprinting sparks a revival, he could easily outrun his odds.

Elsewhere, Clonmacash is admirably consistent without looking obviously ahead of the handicapper, Dandy Magic should run her usual honest race but may find a few better treated rivals, while Oriental Prince and The Caltonian have questions to answer on recent turf form.
