A competitive five-runner sprint rounds off the Nottingham card, with recent Doncaster winner Come On Over looking to follow up under a 4lb higher mark. David O’Meara’s improving three-year-old finally got off the mark when making every yard over 6f earlier this month, and a return to the minimum trip on fast ground could prove ideal if he’s able to dominate from the front once again. In a race lacking obvious early pace, his tactical speed may be a decisive asset.

The chief threat could come from Velvet Goldmine, who makes her handicap debut after two encouraging efforts in novice company. Ed Walker’s filly has shown plenty of ability despite racing keenly, finishing second at Bath after a solid third at Newbury. A first-time hood is applied in an attempt to help her settle, and with Tom Marquand in the saddle, she looks open to significant improvement from an opening mark of 69.

Coyy has been knocking on the door in stronger handicaps and has every chance if the race is run to suit. His Windsor victory earlier in the season suggests he’s capable from this sort of mark, although his hold-up style could leave him with plenty to do in a steadily run contest.

Veteran sprinter Squealer is now well treated compared to the mark from which he won at York last summer, but recent efforts have lacked sparkle and his tendency to miss the break is a concern over a sharp 5f. Stablemate Mondammej is another former high-class handicapper who arrives on a tempting mark, but the nine-year-old’s best work is often done late and the likely tactical nature of the race may count against him.

With only five runners declared, race tactics are likely to play a major role. If Come On Over secures an uncontested lead, he could prove difficult to reel in. However, the unexposed Velvet Goldmine brings the most potential for improvement and rates the principal danger.
