A compact field of five goes to post for this six-furlong novice, and despite the presence of three intriguing newcomers, Topaz sets a clear standard on what has already been achieved on the racecourse.

Jack Channon’s filly has mixed it in strong company throughout her short career. She chased home useful opposition on debut at Newmarket before tackling the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, where she met trouble in running and finished well down the field in a race that can be forgiven. She quickly bounced back with another excellent runner-up effort at Newbury, confirming herself as the one they all have to beat under Billy Loughnane.

The biggest threat may come from Silver Sovereign, a well-bred daughter of Ten Sovereigns making her racecourse debut for Clive Cox. The yard has an excellent record with speedy juveniles, Kieran Shoemark takes the ride, and her pedigree suggests she has the class to make an immediate impact if fully tuned up.

Another newcomer to note is Lola De Valence, representing Rod Millman and partnered by Oisin Murphy. By Havana Grey and from a family that has produced smart two-year-olds, she appeals as the type to improve significantly with racing, although stable confidence in the betting market would enhance her claims.

Happy Enough has the benefit of experience but finished well behind Topaz when they met at Newmarket in May. While Ralph Beckett’s youngsters often improve markedly from their debut, she will need to take a sizeable step forward to reverse that form.

The outsider Golden Caturra is another making her debut. Her pedigree offers some encouragement, but her trainer has a modest record with first-time juvenile runners and she looks the least likely winner on paper.

With only five runners, the pace may not be especially strong, which should suit Topaz, who is expected to race prominently and make full use of her experience. The newcomers are respected—particularly Silver Sovereign—but unless one proves above average at the first attempt, the proven form of Topaz is expected to prevail.

Prediction: Topaz to make her experience count from Silver Sovereign, with Lola De Valence shaping as the best of the remaining runners.
