19:51 Salisbury – 1m Highclere Castle Gin Handicap (Class 3) Preview

·

A competitive four-runner handicap rounds off the Salisbury card, with tactics likely to play a significant role in what looks a steadily run contest on good-to-firm ground.

Celeborn heads the shortlist. The lightly raced four-year-old has yet to build on the promise of his Epsom success last season, but there have been enough encouraging performances this year to suggest he retains plenty of ability. A respectable fifth in a stronger handicap at Ayr last time hinted that he is edging back towards his best, and the switch to first-time blinkers could provide the spark needed. With George Boughey’s stable continuing to operate in excellent form, he looks the horse with the greatest scope for improvement.

The chief danger is Blue Prince, who arrives in consistently good form after winning at Salisbury before finishing a creditable third over a mile at Kempton. A previous winner from a higher handicap mark, he appears well treated on his best form and should be suited by today’s conditions. His tactical speed is another asset in a race that lacks an obvious front-runner.

Allegresse is harder to assess. His all-weather form reads much better than his turf record, but there are reasons for optimism. A drop in both class and trip, coupled with first-time headgear and the booking of Oisin Murphy, could help him rediscover the promise he showed earlier in his career. If he adapts to the surface, he has the ability to get involved.

Arctic Thunder completes the field. Although his handicap mark has become increasingly attractive, his hold-up style may prove a disadvantage in such a small field where the pace is unlikely to be strong. He possesses the talent to feature if the race develops in his favour, but conditions do not appear ideal.

With no confirmed front-runner, the race may develop into a tactical affair where positioning is crucial before the sprint begins in the closing stages. That scenario slightly favours the prominently ridden runners and gives Celeborn a narrow edge over the dependable Blue Prince.

Prediction:

1. Celeborn
2. Blue Prince
3. Allegresse
4. Arctic Thunder
