A competitive Class 4 handicap chase sees nine runners line up over Worcester’s staying 2m7f, with several arriving in excellent form and a strong pace looking likely from the outset.

Regal Renaissance sets the standard after completing a hat-trick of chase victories since joining Jack Jones. The eight-year-old has taken her form to a new level this summer, winning at Ludlow, Uttoxeter and Market Rasen, and now bids to defy another rise in the weights. The chief threat could come from Axel Bleue, who finally got off the mark over fences when landing a course-and-distance handicap earlier this month. That success came on just his third chase start, suggesting there is considerably more improvement to come from Mickey Bowen’s progressive six-year-old. With James Bowen again in the saddle and conditions identical to his recent victory, he looks capable of taking another step forward.

Harrys Hope is one of the most consistent chasers in the field, having finished in the first two in nine of her eleven starts over fences. She shaped encouragingly when runner-up after an eight-month absence last time and should strip fitter here, making her a solid contender for the places.

Court In A Storm also commands respect. A promising second over this course and distance on his chasing debut hinted at useful potential before an unsuccessful attempt over an extended 3m2f at Newton Abbot. Back over a more suitable trip, he has the profile of a horse capable of bouncing back.

Gwash finished second behind Axel Bleue over this course and distance three weeks ago and meets that rival on similar terms. Another honest effort would put him firmly in the mix, while veteran Tiger Orchid can never be dismissed around Worcester, where all three of his chase victories have been recorded.

Front-running Mt Fugi Park is a fascinating outsider. He is dangerous when allowed an uncontested lead, but with other pace angles in the race he may struggle to dominate as he prefers. Grillon De Monty boasts excellent course form but appears fairly handicapped at present, while Jaramillo returns from a lengthy absence needing to prove he retains his old ability.

With several habitual front-runners in the line-up, the race should be run at an honest gallop, likely favouring the stronger stayers and those capable of travelling comfortably just behind the pace.

Verdict

Regal Renaissance deserves favouritism given her remarkable recent winning streak, but Axel Bleue is the most intriguing contender. His recent course-and-distance success suggested he is still learning his craft over fences, and natural improvement could be enough to bridge the gap with the market leader. Harrys Hope appeals as the most reliable option for the minor honours, while Court In A Storm is respected as a possible each-way player if returning to the form of his Worcester second.
