A small but competitive Class 4 handicap in which tactics could prove as important as ability. With only six runners declared, there is no guaranteed strong pace and that may place a premium on track position turning for home.

The race revolves around Tawajjah, who returned from a 612-day absence with an excellent second in a stronger Class 3 handicap at Newmarket. That effort suggested he has improved since his novice days and a 5lb rise to an official mark of 85 may underestimate his current ability. The step up to Sandown’s stiff ten furlongs looks likely to suit his pedigree and finishing style, although a steadily run race would reduce the advantage of his strong late finish.

Assail is one of the most reliable runners in the field. David Simcock’s gelding has been competing consistently in Class 3 and Class 4 company, regularly finishing his races strongly over 1m3f and 1m4f. His latest third at Kempton was another solid effort and he returns to turf from a workable mark of 83. If the leaders go a sensible gallop, he looks capable of finishing strongly and appears to offer more value than his market position suggests.

Top weight Londoner brings the highest official rating but remains something of an enigma. His recent Class 3 form is perfectly respectable and Oisin Murphy is an eye-catching booking, yet his overall turf record remains modest and he has developed a habit of travelling well before finding less than expected in the closing stages. He is capable of winning but does not look obviously ahead of his mark.

Morcar arrives in good heart after a win at Newbury followed by a solid second at Windsor. He is a dependable Class 4 handicapper who handles quick ground well and has enough tactical speed to race prominently if required. That could become a significant advantage in a race lacking obvious pace. His previous Sandown form is less convincing, but he should give another honest account.

The least exposed runner is Kamaway, who has won her last two handicaps and receives plenty of weight from the older geldings. However, those victories came in Class 5 and Class 6 company over one mile, and she now steps up markedly in trip while facing stronger opposition. She has the profile of a filly who could improve again, but current odds leave little room for further progress.

Percival remains the unknown quantity. He has raced only once, finishing well beaten on handicap debut at Yarmouth, and although his pedigree suggests this longer trip could suit, he has considerably more to prove than his rivals. Significant improvement is required if he is to play a major role.

Verdict

This looks a solid rather than exceptional Class 4 handicap. Tawajjah possesses the strongest recent piece of form and is the deserved favourite, while Assail appeals as the value alternative if the pace develops in his favour. Morcar’s consistency and tactical flexibility make him a serious player, and Londoner cannot be dismissed on his best form despite his patchy turf record.
