Naas 18:30 – Arqana Irish EBF Marwell Stakes (Listed) Preview

·

A fascinating renewal of the Listed Marwell Stakes brings together an exciting mix of proven Pattern performers and rapidly improving maiden winners, with several fillies possessing the potential to develop into Group-class juveniles later in the season.

British challenger Shimmering Sun sets the standard on form after a highly creditable effort in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. Despite suffering early interference, she stayed on strongly to finish seventh in a race that has already produced subsequent winners, suggesting her performance was considerably better than the bare result. With that valuable Pattern-race experience behind her, she deserves favouritism.

The chief threat could come from Concorde Landed, who could hardly have made a more striking debut when bolting up by five lengths over this course and distance earlier this month. Paddy Twomey’s filly travelled like a smart prospect throughout and has already earned entries in the Lowther Stakes and Moyglare Stud Stakes, underlining the regard in which she is held. Natural improvement from her first start would make her a serious danger.

Another Irish filly heading in the right direction is April Mist. Trained by Ger Lyons and partnered by Colin Keane, she built on an encouraging debut second by winning comfortably at Bellewstown and looks capable of taking another step forward now tackling Listed company. She lacks the proven ratings of the principals but possesses one of the more appealing improvement profiles in the field.

Stablemate Big Negotiator brings valuable experience at this level after placing in Listed company and contesting the Queen Mary. Consistent throughout her campaign, she should once again give a solid account, although she may need a little more progression to reverse the form with some of the less exposed fillies.

Belle Of The Ball is interesting back at the minimum trip after failing to fully see out 6f in Group 2 company. Her Cork maiden success hinted at useful ability, while Silent Beauty remains something of an enigma, having followed an impressive Yarmouth debut victory with a disappointing run in the Albany Stakes. If able to bounce back, she has the talent to be competitive.

The remainder, including Tropical Crown, Shesthedevil, Eastern Queen, and Back To The Lodge, all need significant improvement to trouble the principals but represent stables capable of producing progressive juveniles.

Verdict

This looks an informative Listed contest with several fillies likely to progress into Pattern company. Shimmering Sun brings the strongest established form and is the deserved favourite, but Concorde Landed has the profile of a filly capable of making the leap into top-class company after her impressive debut success. April Mist appeals as the each-way value should she continue her upward trajectory.

Predicted 1-2-3

1. Shimmering Sun
2. Concorde Landed
3. April Mist
