19:18 Leopardstown – Dublin To Bahrain Race Series Handicap (1m1f)

·

This looks a competitive 0–90 handicap in which there is no standout performer, but several arrive with solid recent form. The likely winning performance is around the upper-80s on a private ratings scale, making this a strong Class 4 rather than an especially deep Class 3 contest.

Manton Bay heads the market and is the obvious improver. The three-year-old produced two encouraging handicap efforts at Naas and Navan before failing to land a blow in a valuable Curragh handicap. He receives a useful weight allowance from his elders and has the profile to progress again, but his current odds leave little margin for error.

Kilcrea Rock is a reliable benchmark. Joseph O’Brien’s gelding finally shed his maiden tag at Dundalk after going close in a Leopardstown handicap earlier in the season. He has tactical pace, handles the track well and is likely to give another honest account, although he may need a little more improvement to defy his revised mark.

Apercu brings the strongest established handicap form. A five-time winner, she has been competing in stronger races than most of today’s rivals and returned to form with a good second at Down Royal last month. Top weight is never easy, but she is proven at this level and looks overpriced if reproducing her best.

Harmani is harder to assess. His six-length Down Royal success in May was visually impressive, but he has struggled under a 15lb higher mark in two subsequent starts. The drop in the weights and the booking of Colin Keane offer encouragement, but he still has something to prove.

Dark Viper is a Leopardstown specialist whose two career wins have both come here. He caught the eye when finishing strongly into second over a mile earlier this month and remains well treated if staying the extra furlong. The step up in trip is the only significant doubt.

Wild Sapphire is the least exposed runner in the field. The Dermot Weld-trained gelding finally got off the mark in a Killarney maiden and has previously shown enough over this course and distance to suggest handicaps can bring further progress. Whether he is ready to make that jump at the first attempt is another matter.

Eastern Peace has hinted at ability without yet producing the level required to win a race of this nature. Her Leopardstown third in May was encouraging and the return to this venue is a plus, but she will need to improve.

The outsider Glyndwr is more interesting than his odds imply. His latest fifth over a mile here was his best run since changing yards, staying on strongly from the rear after a slow start. If the extra furlong helps, he could outrun his price.

Verdict

Manton Bay has the potential to improve beyond his current mark and is the most likely winner, but his price reflects that possibility. Apercu offers the strongest proven handicap form at more attractive odds, while Dark Viper appeals as a solid each-way contender around a track he clearly enjoys. Glyndwr is the value outsider capable of finishing closer than the market expects.

Predicted finishing order

1. Apercu
2. Manton Bay
3. Kilcrea Rock
4. Dark Viper
5. Harmani
6. Glyndwr
7. Wild Sapphire
8. Eastern Peace
