A fascinating tactical contest despite attracting only four runners, with three closely matched stayers and one likely front-runner ensuring there should be no hiding place.
The race revolves around the Northumberland Plate form, where Kirchner finished second and Synergism was a close-up third in one of the strongest staying handicaps of the summer. Kirchner emerged with the stronger piece of form, travelling prominently before finding only one too good, and remains open to further improvement over staying trips. The handicapper has reacted with only a 2lb rise, leaving him towards the head of the market.
Synergism has been a model of consistency since being stepped up in trip by Sir Mark Prescott. A four-time winner last season, he added another success at Lingfield in May before confirming his wellbeing at Newcastle. His ability to settle and finish his races strongly makes him a major player once again, although a steadily run four-runner race may not play as much to his strengths as the strongly run Northumberland Plate.
The value may lie with Fireblade, who boasts the strongest course credentials in the field. Winner of a competitive 2m handicap at Ascot last summer, he returned to form when finishing second over 1m6f here earlier this month and is now back over his optimum distance. His proven ability to handle Ascot’s demanding finish and his tactical versatility make him a dangerous opponent if the race develops into a sprint from the home turn.
Ghaiyya completes the quartet and is the most likely pace angle. Charlie Johnston’s filly has often been at her best when racing prominently and could be allowed an uncontested lead. She arrives in fair form from stronger races than this but has yet to prove herself over two miles, and that remains the principal question she has to answer.
With such a small field, tactics are likely to prove decisive. If Ghaiyya is allowed to dictate steady fractions, the emphasis will shift from stamina to acceleration. Conversely, an honest gallop would bring the proven staying strengths of Kirchner and Synergism more into play.
Verdict
There is little between the three principals on ratings, making this a more competitive race than the betting suggests. Kirchner is the least exposed and sets the standard on recent form, but his price offers limited margin for error in what could become a tactical affair. Fireblade’s excellent Ascot record and return to his favoured trip make him the value alternative, while Synergism is expected to run his usual honest race.
