6.49 Yarmouth – Get Raceday Ready Handicap (7f, Class 5)

·

A competitive six-runner handicap in which proven course form looks a major asset.

Rogue Allegiance sets the standard on recent evidence. Since joining James Owen he has produced three solid efforts over this straight 7f course, finishing second twice after a creditable third in a stronger Class 4. He is now well established around the 73-74 level and another bold bid looks likely, although his patient style could leave him vulnerable if the pace proves steady.

Berry Clever has very similar credentials and is arguably overlooked in the betting. He defeated Rogue Allegiance over this course and distance in May before running respectably in higher-grade company. Dropping back to 7f after a fair effort over a mile should suit, and Silvestre de Sousa is an eye-catching booking. He looks capable of matching the favourite on form.

The progressive Campani arrives seeking a hat-trick after wins at Chelmsford and Yarmouth. He receives plenty of weight from the principals but now steps out of Class 6 company into a stronger race. His latest success suggested there is still improvement to come, although he may prefer a stronger pace and today’s drop back to 7f presents a fresh question.

Mercury Day has been contesting deeper handicaps than this and is better than her recent finishing positions imply. First-time blinkers are applied in an attempt to rekindle the level that saw her win two handicaps last season. If the headgear has the desired effect, she has the class to make her presence felt.

North View has slipped to a workable mark after several below-par turf efforts. His all-weather form earlier in the year was stronger than anything he has shown recently, but the drop in grade, first-time visor and useful 7lb claim offer reasons for cautious optimism.

Mr Ubiquitous won readily on his seasonal return at Kempton but has failed to reproduce that level on turf in two subsequent starts. He needs to bounce back to his spring form if he is to trouble the principals.

Verdict

Rogue Allegiance is the most solid option and sets the form standard, but Berry Clever appeals as the value alternative. He has already beaten the favourite over this course and distance, has remained competitive in stronger races, and the return to 7f looks ideal. Mercury Day is respected on the class drop, while Campani has the potential to improve again but faces a sterner test than in his recent victories.
