A competitive-looking Class 6 handicap closes the card at Chepstow, with several arriving in fair form but none setting an especially demanding standard. An ordinary winning performance is likely to be around the low 60s on private ratings, and tactical positioning could prove just as important as outright ability if the pace is only steady.

Midnight Media heads the market after opening her account at Wolverhampton earlier this month. She travelled strongly before asserting late and a 4lb rise appears fair. As a three-year-old she still has scope to progress and receives a useful weight-for-age allowance from her older rivals. The main question is whether she can reproduce that all-weather improvement on turf, having failed to make an impact on her only previous start on grass.

The unexposed Fozzy Osbourne is an interesting alternative. He showed little in maiden company but took a marked step forward on his handicap debut over a mile at this track, finishing a close third after a slow start. The extra two furlongs look likely to suit and he has considerably more potential than many of these exposed handicappers.

Crimson Road is beginning to look well handicapped after sliding to a mark of 58. His latest fourth at Nottingham was more encouraging than the bare result, travelling into contention before fading late, and that form has received a small boost since. A repeat would put him firmly in the frame.

Brodie’s Boy has become frustrating to follow. His Newbury fourth suggested he remained capable of winning from this sort of mark, but he failed to back that up at Kempton and remains just a one-time winner from 26 starts. He has the ability to be competitive but is difficult to trust.

Veteran mare City Escape rarely runs a bad race at this level and should give another honest account, although recent efforts suggest she is running close to her ceiling rather than looking ready to return to winning ways.

The remainder have more to prove. Tiger Beetle is well below his old handicap marks but has shown little recent encouragement, All About George continues to threaten without finishing strongly, Time For Action needs to leave a poor seasonal return well behind, while Prophet Squeeze is impossible to recommend after refusing to race on her latest start.

Verdict

Midnight Media is the most likely winner if transferring her recent all-weather improvement to turf, but at the likely prices Fozzy Osbourne appeals as the value option with greater scope for further progress. Crimson Road is respected as the best of the exposed runners and can make the frame again.
