A competitive six-runner staying handicap where tactics could prove as important as ability. With no obvious guaranteed front-runner, the pace may be steady, placing an emphasis on track position and a finishing kick rather than outright stamina.

Personal Best heads the market after another solid effort over this course and distance when collared only in the closing strides. She has been admirably consistent since returning this season and her prominent racing style is well suited to a small-field contest. While she sets the standard on recent form, she is now well exposed from a mark of 79 and her short price leaves little room for error.

Appier arrives on the back of a decisive victory at Goodwood on his first start for Tony Carroll. That performance suggested he had turned a corner, travelling strongly before quickening clear in the closing stages. A 6lb rise demands more, but he remains fairly treated if able to reproduce that effort. His hold-up style is the main concern should the race develop into a tactical affair.

Laravie has been one of the most improved stayers in lower-grade handicaps this season, completing a hat-trick before finishing runner-up on her last two starts. Those defeats came in races that were not run to suit, and another steadily run contest would again test her tactical speed. Even so, she is in excellent heart and cannot be dismissed despite stepping into stronger company.

Knight Templar has not been seen since March but was progressing well before his break, finishing second in a Kempton handicap after scoring earlier in the year. If returning in the same form, he has the ability to make his presence felt, although fitness has to be taken on trust.

Ludo’s Landing is capable on his day and won from this mark earlier in the season, but his subsequent form has been mixed and he needs to bounce back. Mister Daydream comes here after two improved all-weather efforts and receives weight from the principals, though he still has something to prove back on turf against stronger opposition.

Overall, this looks a solid rather than exceptional Class 4 handicap. Personal Best is the most likely winner given her consistency and proven course form, but Appier rates a significant danger if the pace is strong enough to bring his late challenge into play. Laravie appeals as the value alternative and could easily outrun her odds if the race unfolds more favourably than it did on her recent starts.
