The feature sprint on the Cork card looks a deep and competitive Premier Handicap, bringing together several in-form handicappers, a recent Listed winner and a handful of progressive three-year-olds. With plenty of natural pace on show over the straight 5f, this should be run at a genuine gallop and may favour a horse capable of finishing strongly rather than one relying on an uncontested lead.

Kendall Roy sets the standard on recent achievements. Last year’s winner of this race returned to Cork to land a Listed contest over the same course and distance before finding Group 2 company beyond him at the Curragh last weekend. Back in handicap company, he has obvious claims despite conceding weight all round and remains the class act in the field.

Sarahmae has enjoyed an excellent summer, progressing rapidly through the handicap ranks with victories at Cork and Down Royal before chasing home Genesis in the valuable Rockingham Handicap at the Curragh. She was unable to make an impact in a Listed race over 6f at Naas on Wednesday, but the return to 5f and handicap company should suit much better. The only question is whether another quick turnaround leaves its mark.

The progressive Genesis has been one of the stories of the Irish sprint handicap season. He produced a career-best effort to win the Rockingham despite racing from out of the weights, then confirmed his wellbeing when running an excellent third over an inadequate 6½f at the Curragh last weekend. Returning to the minimum trip is a positive, although another rise in the weights asks for further improvement.

Ipanema Queen has spent much of the season competing in stronger company than this. A dual Listed winner as a juvenile, she has shaped with credit in competitive handicaps, including a respectable effort at Royal Ascot, before finding Group 2 company too demanding last time. Off a mark of 92, she looks well capable of playing a major role if reproducing her best handicap form.

Rosie Frith receives the three-year-old allowance and arrives after another victory at Bellewstown. She has winning course-and-distance form and is likely to be prominent from the outset, but this represents a stronger test than the race she won earlier this month and she may face competition for the lead.

Among the outsiders, Erosandpsyche is a previous winner of this race and retains enough ability to outrun his odds, while Chicago Call is an intriguing runner dropping back to 5f for the first time after spending much of his career in Listed and Group company. Eclairage is another who likes to force the pace and was runner-up in this race last year, although most of her best recent form has come on the all-weather.

A strong early pace looks likely with Genesis, Rosie Frith and Eclairage all happiest racing prominently. That could create the ideal scenario for a proven finisher such as Sarahmae or the classier Kendall Roy to challenge late.

Verdict

This has the look of a high-quality renewal of the Doneraile Handicap. Kendall Roy is respected as the class horse and a former winner of the race, while Sarahmae brings the strongest recent handicap form. Ipanema Queen appeals as the potential value against the principals after competing consistently in stronger races.
