York 8.25 – Sky Bet Go-Racing-In-Yorkshire Summer Festival Handicap (5½f, Class 4)

·

A competitive three-year-old sprint closes the York card, with several progressive handicappers meeting exposed but reliable performers. The ratings suggest this is likely to take no more than an ordinary-to-strong Class 4 performance to win, but there are a handful with the potential to improve beyond their current marks.

Dolos Dream heads the shortlist. Ivan Furtado’s filly made a successful handicap debut when making all at Pontefract before finding conditions against her on soft ground at Chester. Back on fast ground, returning to 5½ furlongs and still lightly raced after only five starts, she has more scope than most of her rivals. Stall 1 should also allow Silvestre de Sousa to adopt positive tactics from the outset.

The principal danger is Go Vince Go, who has been contesting stronger races throughout the season. His latest fourth in a competitive Class 2 over York’s five furlongs reads particularly well in the context of this drop back into a 0-80. A previous course winner, he is proven on the Knavesmire and the extra half-furlong could prove ideal if the pace is strong enough.

Space Bear has become a model of consistency. A narrow second at Thirsk and a solid third in a Doncaster Class 4 confirm that she is running to a reliable level, although she may now be fairly treated by the handicapper rather than ahead of it. She looks another likely to be finishing well.

Explosive Finnish has spent much of the campaign knocking on the door without getting his head in front. His Chester second was one of the better pieces of form on offer and the return to a sharper test should suit after a respectable effort over six furlongs here last time. He has place claims once again, although his tendency to find one or two too strong tempers confidence.

Of the remainder, Kinnalargy is capable on his best form but has become difficult to predict after two below-par York performances, while Anaisa drops in class having competed in stronger company and now tries a first-time tongue-tie in an attempt to revive the form that saw her win a Listed race as a juvenile.

Lower down the weights, Slot arrives on the back of successive runner-up finishes and continues to improve, but this represents another rise in class and she will need a career best. Dragon Spin and U S S Charleston are both honest handicappers but appear vulnerable from their current marks, while Nursia remains the wildcard after just three starts but has yet to justify an opening rating of 80 on turf.

The pace looks likely to come from Dolos Dream, with Dragon Spin and Go Vince Go expected to race prominently. If the favourite is allowed to dictate she could prove difficult to reel in, but York’s long straight rarely forgives those going too hard too early, which should give the stronger finishers every chance.

Verdict

This looks a good opportunity for Dolos Dream to confirm herself a progressive handicapper. She is back under her ideal conditions and still has the most improvement to come. Go Vince Go rates the chief threat on proven course form and stronger recent opposition, while Space Bear looks the safest option for those seeking a place bet.
